Oxnard supports "social host" law

Parents, landlords, tenants can be fined if youths drink

Starting late next month, Oxnard property owners will face stiff fines if they allow underage drinking in their homes.

Under Tuesday night’s unanimous City Council decision, Oxnard joins Ventura County and seven other cities with so-called “social host” ordinances.

The law is aimed at stemming problems that arise when those under 21 drink at friends’ or parents’ homes. Property owners, landlords and tenants will face a $250 fine for a first offense. Penalties will escalate to $1,000 for repeat violations.

The law will take effect in mid-April

In a continued effort to provide for a safe community free from gang violence and intimidation, the Oxnard Police Department has sought and obtained two civil gang injunctions against local gangs.

A Permanent gang injunction against Colonia Chiques was granted on June 1, 2005.
A Preliminary gang injunction against Southside Chiques was granted on September 18, 2006.

The Citizens Academy is a twelve-week program designed to provide Oxnard city residents first hand information about how their Police Department operates. Participants will find out what it’s like to be a police officer in Oxnard, and learn the inherent dangers and stresses in law enforcement. Participants are provided a hands-on opportunity to experience split-second decision-making situations that police officers face daily. As the Fourth of July quickly approaches, Oxnard residents and visitors are reminded that all fireworks are prohibited in Oxnard. Use, sales or possession of any type of fireworks may subject persons to arrest or may receive a criminal or civil citation. Depending upon the violation, fines can be as high as $1,000 and you may be also be subjected to jail time.

Oxnard officers will be out in force on July 4th and the days preceding Independence Day looking for fireworks violations. Fireworks disrupt neighborhoods, disturb pets, cause fires, injuries and can even result in death.

Contrary to what some law enforcement insignia collectors have been led to believe by unscrupulous sellers on auction Web sites like eBay, the Oxnard Police Department does not have a new shoulder patch design. The image you see to the left is fraudulent. The Department has no plans to change insignia designs in the foreseeable future. Any other designs other than those posted here are frauds.

So do you lend your car to friends or family members? As the registered owner of a vehicle, you are required to ensure that all drivers are properly licensed to operate your vehicle. Failing to make sure that all persons operating your car are properly licensed will result in the vehicle being towed away and may result in an impound of up to 30 days costing more than $1,300!
