Investigations Unit

The Major Crimes Unit consists of six homicide investigators, two full-time and three part-time crime scene investigators, and one sergeant. The investigators of the Major Crimes Unit are on-call 24 hours a day to respond to homicides, officer involved critical incidents, such as officer-involved shootings and other deaths that are suspicious. One of the six investigators is assigned as the Cold Case Investigator and investigates unsolved homicides dating as far back as 1966.

The dedicated investigators of this unit utilize and maximize all available resources, technological advances, and traditional investigative methods to solve crimes, track down and apprehend suspects, accomplices, and fugitives. Investigators prepare reports with the information gathered to present to the District Attorney’s Office for filing. Investigators work closely as a team with the prosecutors to ensure a successful prosecution. The working philosophy of the Major Crimes Investigators is to respond to crime scenes and work every existing lead until exhaustion. As a result, it is not unusual for homicide Investigators to work at a feverish pace for days or weeks on end.
