INCIDENT:	Mother Arrested for Causing Injury to Daughter in Drunk Driving Crash

DETAILS:

An Oxnard mother was arrested for suspicion of felony drunk driving and felony child endangerment by Oxnard police following an early-morning crash that injured her 5-year-old daughter.

Oxnard police received a call of a collision at Harbor Freight Tools on E. Third Street at 2:49 a.m. The crash was witnessed by security personnel on duty at the business.

Witnesses observed the vehicle driven by Salas crash through a closed driveway gate leading to the business. The vehicle continued through the parking lot then crashed into a concrete median. Oxnard police and fire personnel responded to the scene and detained Salas who had exited the car with her daughter, Isabella Chavez. Two open containers of alcohol were found on the floorboard of the car.

As of this writing, Salas is still being treated at a local hospital for head injuries sustained in the crash. Chavez received minor injuries in the crash and was released to her father.

Upon release from the hospital, Salas will face charges of felony drunk driving and felony child endangerment. Once booked in the Ventura County Jail, bail will be set at $50,000. An investigation is continuing.

INCIDENT:	Carjacking Arrest and Vehicle Pursuit

On 08/16/2010 at approximately 0154 hours, a 35 year-old Oxnard resident was approached by three men. He knew one of the men and was going to give them a ride home. A suspect, who was later identified as a 16 year-old Oxnard gang member, produced a handgun and put it to the victim’s head. He demanded money from the victim while pointing a handgun at him. The victim gave them what little money he had while two other suspects threatened him with beer bottles. After the victim gave them his money, the suspects stole his Toyota Camry. The victim contacted the Police Department and the vehicle description was broadcast to patrol officers.

About 30 minutes later Oxnard police officers Patrick Blanche and his partner, Moses Martinez, found the vehicle in the area of Saviers Road and Hill Street. The officers attempted to stop the stolen Toyota Camry but it failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. During the pursuit two men exited the car and were detained for further investigation. The driver continued to drive around South Oxnard and eventually stopped near Commercial Avenue and South Oxnard Boulevard. The pursuit lasted approximately 33 minutes. The driver surrendered and officers later located a replica .45 caliber pistol under the front seat. This is believed to be the weapon used during the robbery. The driver was found to be a 16 year-old suspected gang member and he was positively identified as the person who used the gun during the robbery. The rear passenger, Vidal Magana of Oxnard, was identified as one of the men threatening with a bottle during the robbery. Magana also has ties to an Oxnard gang. The third person who was detained during the vehicle pursuit was cleared of any involvement in the initial robbery and he was released. Vidal Magana was booked into the Ventura County Jail for robbery, carjacking, and a gang allegation. The 16 year-old driver was booked into the Ventura County Juvenile Hall for robbery, carjacking, evading arrest, and a gang allegation. On 8-16-2010 at approximately 0730 hours, Oxnard Police Officers responded to a call of a subject down in the alley of 560 S. A St., in the City of Oxnard. Officers and paramedics arrived and found the victim suffering from critical injuries. The victim was transported to Ventura County Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition. Investigators are attempting to locate friends or family for the victim, with negative results. If anyone knows the victim or his family, they are urged to contact Detective Steve Funk immediately.

On 08/16/2010 at approximately 1030 hours, Officers of the Oxnard Police Department received information about a stolen vehicle parked in a parking lot in the 1600 block of S. Oxnard Bl. Investigators from the Ventura County Auto Theft Taskforce (VENCAT) conducted surveillance on the vehicle. After a suspect was observed inside the vehicle attempting to remove the stereo from the dash, uniformed Oxnard Police Officers attempted to contact the suspect. The suspect saw officers approaching and fled on foot. Oxnard Police K-9, Cody, was deployed after the suspect refused to stop at the order of officers. Cody apprehended the suspect in the 1700 block of Gisler Ave.

Suspect, Joseph Villareal (31 years) was arrested for burglary and possession of stolen property.

On 8-13-10 Officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to a call of a burglary in progress to a business in the 100 block of North Oxnard Boulevard. Officers contacted an employee at the business and learned that he was the victim of an attempted robbery. No property was taken during the attempted robbery. The suspects fled the area on foot, however they were followed by an independent witness. The suspects were seen entering another closed business in the 100 block of North “C” Street and removing property. When officers arrived they located the suspects in the area and they were arrested. The property that was taken was recovered. Suspects Roman and Andrade were booked into Ventura County Jail. The juvenile was booked into Ventura County Juvenile Hall.

After a month long robbery investigation, members of the Violent Crimes Unit were able to identify six persons that were responsible for the incident. Due to the nature of the crime that was committed, SWAT teams from Oxnard, Ventura, and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department were utilized to serve several warrants at various locations in the City of Oxnard and Ventura.

Miguel Pena, Ambriosio Gomez, Hortencia Lopez, Edgar Canchola, Gerardo Mariscal, and Alberto Castro were arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for robbery and other felony offenses. An investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at about 1255 hours, officers from the Oxnard Police Department along with EMS personnel responded to an injury traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a car on Gonzales Road west of Oxnard Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found that a black, Honda Accord, driven by Angeles, 83 years old of Camarillo had struck a pedestrian (Vargas, 32 years old of Oxnard).

Pedestrian Vargas sustained head injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition. Angeles was not directly injured as a result of the collision but was transported as a precaution.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the Honda, driven by Angeles, was traveling eastbound on Gonzales Road towards Oxnard Boulevard. Several witnesses indicated that Pedestrian Vargas had run out into traffic on Gonzales Road west of Oxnard Boulevard between several vehicles and was struck by the Honda.

At this time it is unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor in this collision. Additional analysis results are pending.

An investigation is continuing.

After the shooting the suspects fled in an unknown direction. The victim vehicle was located several blocks away. There were no injuries. The area was searched for the suspects with negative results. On 08/09/10, at approximately 0145 hrs., two adult males were walking in the 600 block of Hueneme Rd. when they were confronted by the 2 above described suspects. One of the suspects brandished a handgun and demanded the victims’ property. After obtaining the property, while the suspects were fleeing W/B on Hueneme Rd. near J Street, one of the suspects fired one round into the air.

DETAILS:

On 8/5/10 at approximately 1829 hours Oxnard Police were dispatched to the 900 block of South Ventura Road regarding a shooting that had just occurred. When officers arrived they located two victims that had sustained gunshot wounds. One of the victims had sustained a gunshot wound to his right arm and the other victim had sustained two gunshot wounds to his left hand. Both victims were transported to VCMC where they treated for their injuries and later released.

Sergeant Amon, who was enroute to VCMC to check on the condition of the victims, located the suspect vehicle at the intersection of Mills and Main Street in the City of Ventura. Sergeant Amon conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. When the vehicle stopped three of occupants fled from the vehicle. Three of the occupants fled from the vehicle while one occupant stayed in the vehicle. One of the suspects that fled from the vehicle was located and arrested. The two suspects that were arrested were identified as Samuel Garcia (5/9/90) and Raymond Morales (3/29/84). Both suspects were charged with various felony charges.
