On May 29^th, 2010, between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 12:30 A.M., officers from the Oxnard Police Department, Port Hueneme Police Department, Ventura Police Department, Santa Paula Police Department, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, and California State University Channel Islands conducted a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint in the city of Port Hueneme.   

The checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lanes of Ventura Road at Sunkist Street.

Officers screened 1211 motorists who passed through the checkpoint.  Officers conducted four DUI investigations that lead to the arrest of all four drivers for DUI.  One of the drivers traveling towards the checkpoint attempted to avoid it by turning around and driving in the wrong direction on Ventura Road against oncoming traffic.  Officers working at the checkpoint were successful in stopping this vehicle before a head-on crash was likely to occur.  The driver of this vehicle was found to have a blood alcohol level of .21, over twice the legal limit of .08.  

In addition to the DUI arrests, two warrant arrests were made and nine drivers were issued citations for various drivers’ license violations.  Seven drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and two drivers were cited for driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license.  Nine vehicles were towed from the checkpoint.

During the remainder of the Memorial Day weekend, several officers and deputies will be conducting additional DUI saturation patrols in the cities of Oxnard, Fillmore, Santa Paula, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, and Ventura.     

Avoid the 14 Ventura County will conduct several additional DUI checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols this year starting July 4^th weekend.  These DUI operations are an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer.  The public is reminded to dial 911 if a suspected drunken driver is seen.  These DUI operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.

On 5-27-10, detectives from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a follow up investigation with the victims from the take-over robbery at 5 De Mayo Jewelry, 120 West Channel Islands Boulevard, that occurred on 5/19/10. The victims worked with officers and were able to produce a composite sketch of one of the suspects involved in this robbery.

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Division conducted two Sobriety and Driver’s License checkpoints on May 27^th, 2010, from 6:00 P.M. to midnight.  

The first checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lanes of Ventura Road @ Devonshire Drive.

The second checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lanes of Oxnard Boulevard @ Citrus Grove Lane.

Officers screened 1,125 motorists who passed through the checkpoints.  Officers conducted three DUI investigations with drivers who had been drinking alcohol but no arrests were made. 

11 drivers were issued citations for various drivers’ license violations.  Nine drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and two drivers were cited for driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license.  Five vehicles were towed from the checkpoints.

While working at the checkpoint on Ventura Road, officers stopped a vehicle as it was approaching the checkpoint.  Although the vehicle was stopped for another vehicle code violation, the vehicle was soon discovered to have been reported stolen out of the city of Fillmore on May 26th.  The driver of the vehicle, a minor, was arrested by investigating officers for driving a reported stolen vehicle and transported to the Ventura County Juvenile Detention Center.         

The Oxnard Police Department will conduct several additional DUI checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols this year.  The next DUI checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday night, May 29^th, from 6:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M. and will be held in the city of Port Hueneme.  These DUI operations are an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer.  We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911.  The checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.

As the Memorial Day weekend is approaching, the Oxnard Police Department will conduct a multi-location sobriety and drivers license checkpoint Thursday night, May 27th, from 6:00 P.M. to midnight. The checkpoint will be held throughout the City of Oxnard.

During the Memorial Day weekend in 2009, the Oxnard Police Department investigated over 20 motor vehicle collisions with eight of them involving injuries. Four of those crashes involved a DUI driver. Officers also arrested 20 DUI drivers during that weekend.

Statewide, over 385 people were injured or killed during the 2009 Memorial Day weekend.

So far this year, the Oxnard Police Department has arrested over 394 DUI drivers.

On Saturday night, May 29th, officers from the Oxnard Police Department will join forces with other law enforcement officers in Ventura County to conduct another DUI checkpoint in the City of Port Hueneme. In addition to the checkpoints this weekend, several officers will be deployed to conduct DUI patrol this weekend in the cities of Fillmore, Santa Paula, Moorpark, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, and Oxnard. All of these DUI operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Oxnard Police Department is committed to improving traffic safety and will continue to conduct these checkpoints and DUI enforcement operations in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer.

On 5-21-10 around 0725 hours, Oxnard Police Officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of West Cedar Street regarding an assault with a metal pipe. The victim provided a description of the suspect and a responding officer located a 17 year old male Oxnard resident that matched the physical description nearby.

The investigation revealed that there had been prior disputes between the parties and the suspect challenged the victim and shouted gang slogans. The suspect attacked the victim and struck him at least once with a metal pipe causing a non-life threatening injury.

The 17 Year old male juvenile was booked into the Ventura County Juvenile Hall for Assault with a deadly weapon and a gang allegation. Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact Detective Jeff McGreevy (805) 385-3982.

This is an ongoing investigation.

On 5-21-10 around 1530 hours, Oxnard Police Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Channel Island Boulevard and Rose Avenue regarding a fight.

Officers observed numerous suspected gang members fleeing the area on foot and in vehicles. A Blue sedan fleeing the area was stopped. The occupants were identified as being involved in the fight with rival gang members.

The one of the occupants had a crowbar hidden in his pants along with a folding knife. Information was also received to indicated the occupants of the vehicle conspired together to meet rival gang members to fight.

The occupants were arrested for being possession of a concealed weapon, fighting in public, conspiracy and the gang enhancement.

On the above date and time Officers from the Oxnard Police Department located a stolen vehicle being driven by the above suspect in the city of Oxnard. Officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

The pursuit began in the area of Statham Ave. and Oxnard Blvd. Officers pursued the suspect north through the city, and southbound on the 101 Freeway. The suspect lost control of the stolen vehicle and collided with a second vehicle and the center median of the freeway, causing the suspect vehicle to overturn. After the suspect vehicle came to a stop, the suspect exited the stolen vehicle and fled northbound on foot across the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway and heavy northbound vehicle traffic. Officers chased the suspect and took her into custody without further incident after a short foot chase. The California Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene and assisted with the collision investigation.

The suspect was arrested for vehicle theft, felony evading, felony hit and run, misdemeanor hit and run, and was found to be under the influence of cocaine and on parole. The suspect and the driver of the vehicle that the suspect collided with on the 101 freeway were transported to St. Johns hospital with minor injuries from the traffic collision. The suspect was booked into county jail for the above charges.

On 5/22/10 at 04:45 hours, the Oxnard Police Department took a stolen vehicle report on a red 1991 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck taken from the area of Samuel Ave. & Lark St. On 5/22/10 at about 10:40 hours, the victim spotted her vehicle being driven through a shopping center in the 2800 block of Saviers Rd.

The victim phoned the police while following the vehicle which was driven by 30-year old Oxnard resident Julio Cesar Carriedo. The victim watched Carriedo eventually abandon the vehicle in the alley of Arcadia St near Iris St. Officers established a perimeter and began searching the area eventually locating Carriedo in the back yard of a residence in the 200 block of E. Iris St. Carriedo had been trying to hide under the lid in a water-filled hot tub.

Carriedo was taken into custody without incident and he was subsequently booked into Ventura County Jail for auto theft (a felony) as well as two outstanding misdemeanor warrants. He is being held on $250,000 bail. The truck was recovered undamaged and returned to the owner.

On 5-24-2010 at approximately 0507 hours, two officers from the Oxnard Police Department were dispatched to a call of an “audible alarm from a business” that is located in the 3400 block of W. 5th St. When the officers arrived they noticed a broken front window to the business. One of the officers moved to the rear of the building while the second officer covered the front. The officer who went to the rear of the building reported that he heard movement coming from inside of the business. Around this time, the second officer reported seeing a subject inside the front side of the business.

A door at the rear of the business suddenly opened and the suspect was confronted by the officer. The officer, who had drawn his weapon, ordered the suspect out of the business and to raise his arms. The suspect refused to comply with the officer’s commands, and went back into the business, closing the door behind him. The suspect opened the door several more times, continuing to refuse to comply with the officer’s orders to show his hands to the officer. It appears that once the suspect realized that the officer was by himself in this location, the suspect charged directly at the officer in an aggressive manner, rather than flee in a direction that would have better allowed him an opportunity to escape. Weighing the circumstances and fearing for his life, the officer shot the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No weapon was found in the suspect’s possession.

The officer, who was not injured, was placed paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
