(Oxnard, CA) On Thursday, June 7, 2012 Oxnard PD will once again participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Ventura County Special Olympics. This is the twentieth year OPD has participated in the event.
 
Officers and their family members, Special Olympics athletes and members of the community will participate in the Oxnard leg which encompasses 12.5 miles. The torch route in Oxnard is as follows:

At about 9 a.m. –
Receive the torch from Ventura PD at Highway 101 and Ventura Road (pedestrian bridge)
South on Ventura Road to Vineyard Avenue
East on Vineyard Avenue to “H” Street
South on “H” Street to Gonzales Road
East on Gonzales Road to “C” Street
South on “C” Street to Wooley Road
West on Wooley Road to Ventura Road
South on Ventura Road to Channel Islands Boulevard **pass torch to Port Hueneme PD**
(at this point OPD runners will continue until torch passes to CHP)
Continue south on Ventura Road to Hueneme Road
East on Hueneme Road to Saviers Road
North on Saviers Road to Channel Islands Boulevard
East on Channel Islands Boulevard to Highway 1  **pass torch to CHP**
 
The Special Olympics Torch Run has three legs in Southern California. The Northern leg begins in San Luis Obispo as selected law enforcement representatives and Special Olympics athletes carry the torch on its journey to the Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach, where all three torches meet to light the giant cauldron at the opening ceremonies signifying the official start to the Special Olympics Summer Games. The other two legs begin in the Inland Empire and the U.S. Mexico border.

On November 24, 2011, at about 4:30 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to the 1300 block of West Olive Street regarding a collision involving a bicycle and a pick-up truck. When officers and EMS personnel arrived, they found an injured 6-year-old boy.
 
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.
 
The preliminary investigation indicates that the boy on the bike was traveling eastbound on the south sidewalk of Olive Street toward M Street. The pick-up truck was also traveling eastbound on Olive Street toward M Street. For unknown reasons, the boy rode into the street and was hit by the pick-up truck. The collision knocked the boy from his bicycle; he was then run over by the truck. The driver was not cited because the preliminary investigation revealed that the child violated the driver’s right of way.

INCIDENT	Arrest of robbery suspects

Beginning in April of this year a series of armed street robberies occurred in area of 2300 South “J” Street. Most of the victims were between 12-14 years old and attended junior high schools in the area. In each robbery, the suspects were armed with a knife.
 
Robbery detectives from the Oxnard Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit identified the two suspects. Both suspects are 17 years old and are members of a local criminal street gang. On 5/18/12, the two suspects were arrested by detectives and booked into the Ventura County Juvenile Facility. Both of them were charged with five counts of armed robbery, conspiracy to commit a felony, and the gang enhancement charge.

(Oxnard, CA)The Oxnard Police Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for a year-long, anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways.  New enforcement measures to reduce impaired driving have been implemented as a result of a recent $250,000 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. The Oxnard Police Department is dedicated to keeping our streets safe through both enforcement and education.
 
The special DUI Enforcement and Awareness grant will assist in efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and other drug related collisions. The grant activities will specifically target impaired driving offenders as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving. This will be accomplished through the use of DUI/driver’s license checkpoints, warrant searches and stakeouts for repeat DUI offenders, saturation patrols, and court stings targeting DUI offenders with suspended or revoked driver’s licenses who get behind the wheel after leaving court. 
 
California saw a decline in overall traffic deaths in 2010, marking the fifth year in a row of safer roads. According to federal government figures, total vehicle fatalities dropped 11.9 percent, from 3,081 in 2009 to 2,715 in 2010. Since 2005 when the number of fatalities was 4,333, the 2010 figures show a total decline of 37.3 percent.
 
The city of Oxnard has seen similar reductions in traffic fatalities in 2011. As of November 2011, there have been a total of three fatalities, as compared to 2010, with five fatalities. The 2011 figures show a total decline of 40 percent.
 
Funding for this program is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration. The funding period began October 1, 2011 and runs through September 30, 2012.

On May 19, 2012 at about 5:46 a.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to 1012 South Oxnard Boulevard regarding a single vehicle collision into a pole. Officers and EMS personnel found that the driver of a red Ford Mustang had sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.
 
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Ford Mustang was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Oxnard Boulevard from Wooley Road. For unknown reasons, the vehicle lost control and collided into a pole.
 
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

On November 20, 2011 at about noon, the Oxnard Fire Department and EMS personnel responded to a medical call of a woman in a car in the parking lot of McDonald’s at 1741 Pacific Avenue. The caller reported that the woman was not breathing.

Fire department personnel requested Oxnard Police respond to assist. When officers arrived the victim was being transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center. The victim died while at the hospital and the reason for the death was not readily apparent at the time. This case is being investigated by Oxnard PD as a suspicious death.
 
The victim’s name is Jung Ja Lee, 69. She is a resident of Laguna Woods, CA.

On May 21, 2012, at about 3:40 p.m., Oxnard PD officers were patrolling the area around Camino Del Sol and Juanita Avenue when they came upon a disturbance. A citizen told the officers it was an altercation involving three people.  
 
The officers contacted and detained all three individuals. After a preliminary investigation, officers learned that a strong armed robbery had just occurred. The victim reported that one of the suspects took his cell phone, while the second suspect attempted to take his skateboard. The victim attempted to recover his property when he was physically assaulted by both suspects.
 
Both suspects were arrested for strong armed robbery and attempted strong armed robbery.

UPDATE:   The name of the suspect in this case is Jose Luis Ramirez 1/6/1993. He is a resident of Oxnard and is being treated at Ventura County Medical Center. Ramirez is a documented gang member. The vehicle in this case is a reported stolen vehicle.

At nearly 10 p.m. on November 19, 2011, a Port Hueneme Police Officer attempted to make a traffic stop of a possible stolen vehicle in southern Oxnard. The vehicle was occupied by a lone male occupant.  The suspect stopped the vehicle in the 900 block of Redwood Street in Oxnard.  The suspect rapidly accelerated his vehicle in the officer’s direction and an officer-involved shooting took place. The suspect was struck by police gunfire and transported to the hospital for medical care. No officers were injured during the confrontation.
 
Oxnard police officers did not fire at the suspect  Oxnard PD is handling the shooting investigation because it took place in our jurisdiction.
 
At the time of this press release the suspect was in critical condition at Ventura County Medical Center. The suspect’s name is not being released pending the notification of family members.

On 5/17/12 at about 3:30 p.m., Oxnard police officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Fremont Way regarding a stabbing victim.
 
Oxnard police officers arrived on scene and were unable to locate the victim. The victim was later found to have been transported by a private party to St. John's Hospital. Officers contacted the victim and additional witnesses at the hospital. Officers were advised that several subjects initiated contact with the victim and a confrontation occurred. During the confrontation, gang slogans were shouted out and the incident escalated into a stabbing. The suspects then fled. The incident appears to be gang related and an investigation is continuing.
 
Investigators believe there are numerous witnesses to this incident. The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a multi-location sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, November 18, 2011, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.    
 
The first checkpoint was conducted in the westbound lanes of Pleasant Valley Road at Longfellow Way.  The second checkpoint was held in the southbound lanes of Oxnard Boulevard (SR-1), south of Vineyard Avenue (SR-232).
 
Officers screened 1,279 motorists who passed through the checkpoint locations and conducted five DUI investigations with drivers who had been drinking alcohol.  Three drivers were found to have been driving under the influence of alcohol and were arrested. One driver was arrested for an outstanding warrant.
 
Citations were issued to 48 drivers for various drivers’ license violations at the checkpoint.  Forty-four drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and four drivers were cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license. Thirteen drivers were cited for other violations, including one who was cited for driving with open bottles of alcohol in her vehicle. Twenty-one vehicles were towed from the checkpoint.
 
The Oxnard Police Department will continue to conduct DUI enforcement operations in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related collisions on our roadways. We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911.  These DUI enforcement operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.
