DETAILS:
On October 21, 2011 at 5:30 p.m., detectives from the Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit arrested 28-year-old Nathan Lamont Preston of Oxnard for the murder of his mother, Sheryl Tye.  Preston was later booked into Ventura County Jail for murder.  Preston’s bail is set at $500,000. 
 
Tye’s murder occurred in the 2000 block of North Ventura Road, on 10/9/11.  Members of the Oxnard Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau and the Special Enforcement Unit have been actively investigating this crime since the night it occurred.  Oxnard Police are continuing to investigate this crime.  Members of the public are asked to call Detective Jeff Kay at 805.385.8174 with any information.

INCIDENT	DUI saturation patrol
DATE/TIME	April 27, 2012 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.

(Oxnard, CA) On Friday, April 27, 2012, officers from the Oxnard Police Traffic Unit conducted DUI saturation patrol between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m.    
 
The officers stopped 76 vehicles, conducted 14 DUI investigations, and arrested seven drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol. Officers also issued 34 citations to drivers for various vehicle code violations. Twelve of the drivers who were stopped did not have a valid driver’s license.
 
The Oxnard PD Traffic Unit will be out once again searching for DUI drivers on Cinco de Mayo weekend, Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5. OPD reminds everyone to use a designated driver if they plan to celebrate over the weekend.
 
These operations are funded through grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) though the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).
 
Please report drunk drivers by calling 911. Drive sober and drive safely!

DETAILS:
 On 10/15/11 at approximately 1440 hours, an Oxnard police officer was on patrol in the area of Pleasant Valley Rd. and Jefferson Square when he was flagged down by a subject.
 
The subject told the officer he was parked in the 5200 block of Longfellow Way when he was approached by the suspect described above. The suspect approached the victim’s vehicle on foot while the victim was in the driver seat. The suspect demanded money from the victim. When the victim refused, the suspect pulled out a handgun. The victim sped away in his vehicle and the suspect shot at the victim as he was fleeing. The victim’s vehicle was hit by gunfire but there were no injuries sustained.
 
Officers set up a perimeter and conducted a search of the neighborhood for about three hours. Officers were unable to locate the suspect.

INCIDENT	Minor injury collision involving bicyclist

(Oxnard, CA) On Monday, April 23, 2012 at about 7:45 p.m. Oxnard PD officers responded to the intersection of Cesar Chavez Drive and Rose Avenue in Oxnard. A 16-year-old male resident of Oxnard was hit while riding his bike in the north crosswalk of the intersection.
 
According to witnesses, the teen was traveling east, across the north side of the intersection against a red light. A woman in a 2007 Honda Accord was traveling north on Rose Avenue and hit the bicyclist. The teen was taken to Ventura County Medical Center by ambulance. He suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Honda was not injured in the collision.
 
Neither drugs nor alcohol are factors in this collision.
 
This is the second crash involving teenaged bicyclists in Oxnard in the past three weeks. In both crashes, the bicyclists violated the right-of-way of cars. Fortunately, in this most recent crash, the teen was not seriously injured. In the crash that occurred on April 4 at Saviers Road and Fir Avenue, the teen suffered very serious injuries. It’s very important for bicyclists to use caution when traveling the roadways with cars and in no case is it appropriate for bicyclists to cross streets against red lights or ride out into traffic lanes.

DETAILS:
On October 12, 2011 at about 9 p.m., Oxnard Police officers were handling another call for service in the 4500 block Terrace Avenue when they heard several gunshots in the immediate area. While checking the area, the officers located a 19-year-old victim who had been shot and had several stab wounds. The victim was transported to VCMC where he underwent extensive surgery. Unfortunately the victim did not survive his injuries.

According to witnesses, the victim was walking in the 4500 block of Terrace Ave when an argument took place which involved at least two other men. The witness heard several gunshots and saw several people running through the alley.

For more than 40 years the Kiwanis Club of Oxnard has partnered with the Oxnard Police Department to recognize outstanding employees. The nominees for the 2011 Police Officer of the Year are: Officer Rachel Burr, Officer Mike Thomas and Sergeant Alex Arnett. The criteria for this award are: must have achieved the rank of police officer II or senior police officer; performance of duties in an exemplary manner; strong academic credentials or evidence of an earnest effort to obtain a higher degree; activity beyond the normal scope o duty as in voluntarily engaging in the community affairs of Oxnard in a significant way.
 
In addition to the Officer of the Year recognition, Chief Jeri Williams will present the following awards to OPD employees: supervisor of the year; civilian employee of the year; MADD award; dispatcher of the year; chief’s award of excellence; and volunteer of the year / Clancy Nieland award.

At 2230 hours, 10/9/11, officers responded to a check-the-well-being of a 55-year old Oxnard woman. On arrival the officers were able to gain access to the home and the victim was found deceased. The victim’s name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. (Oxnard, CA) On Thursday, April 19, 2012 at about 12:44 p.m., Oxnard PD officers and fire personnel responded to a traffic collision in the 1000 block of Oxnard Boulevard – State Route 1. Upon arrival, officers found that a green sedan, driven by a 17-year-old male, had collided with an electrical transformer located in the parking lot of the Cabo Restaurant at 1041 S. Oxnard Boulevard. The collision caused the high-voltage lines that span across Wooley Road to fall onto the roadway creating a severe electrical hazard for both motorists and pedestrians. The downed power lines also disrupted power to several surrounding businesses and traffic control signals in the immediate area.
 
Southern California Edison officials responded to the scene and are currently working on replacing the downed lines and restoring power to the affected businesses.
 
To facilitate repairs, Wooley Road between “C” Street and Oxnard Boulevard (Five Points) will remain closed in both directions. Edison officials say that the repairs will take several hours and estimate a completion time of 2:00 a.m. on Friday. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes.
 
The driver of the sedan was not injured in the collision. Investigators are trying to determine why he veered off the road.

DETAILS:
On 9/21/11 at approximately 1540 hours, Oxnard Police officers were dispatched to St John’s Regional Medical Center reference a stabbing victim.  Officers responded and learned that the stabbing took place in the area of Channel Islands Blvd and Paula St.
 
The victim was walking in the area of Channel Islands Blvd and Paula St when he was approached by a Hispanic male, approximately 18-19 yrs. olds, 5’11” tall, 180 lbs., with a shaved head wearing black/blue/white flannel and black pants. The suspect stabbed the victim in the torso and ran towards Channel Islands Blvd. The victim was driven to Saint John’s Regional Medical Center by a private party. Due to his condition, the victim was transported to VCMC and is listed in critical condition.

(Oxnard, CA) On April 20, 2012 at about 8 a.m., Oxnard PD officers responded to the 4500 block of Reading Drive regarding a shooting and attempted residential burglary. Officers discovered that the victim of the attempted burglary stopped the 15-year-old suspect as he was leaving the area. The victim decided to drive the suspect home and was directed by the suspect to the College Estates neighborhood. While driving through the neighborhood, the victim noticed that he was being followed by two Hispanic males in a blue, full sized pick-up truck. As a result, the victim stopped his vehicle in the 4400 block of Anchorage Street. The driver of the full sized pick-up truck then fired once into the victim’s vehicle, shattering a window; the victim was not injured. All three suspects fled the area in the pick-up truck. Officers checked the area for the suspects and the suspect vehicle but were not able to locate them.
