(Oxnard, CA) On Tuesday, July 24, from 5 to 9 p.m., visit Dominick’s Italian Restaurant located at 477 N. Oxnard Boulevard for the annual Tip-A-Cop event to benefit Special Olympics Ventura County. Officers from Oxnard PD will act as “celebrity servers” with all tips becoming tax-deductible donations to Special Olympics Ventura County. 
 
“We are pleased that Special Olympics continues to receive the support of Dominick’s,” states Special Olympics Regional Director Peggi Preston, “and we look forward to another successful evening. All the representatives from Oxnard PD are the greatest!”

Officers will be assisted by Ventura County Special Olympics athletes who help serve food and sell fundraising t-shirts. Athletes are anxious to show off their medals and share their Special Olympics experiences.
 
For more than twenty-five years, Ventura County law enforcement agencies have been raising tens of thousands of dollars annually allowing Special Olympics Ventura County to offer year round sports training and competition to hundreds of men and women with intellectual disabilities, ages eight years and up, free of charge, in ten sports at more than twenty training sites throughout Ventura County.

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a multi-location sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, December 9, 2011, from 7:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M.    
 
The first checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lanes of Saviers Rd. at Bryce Canyon Ave. The second checkpoint was held in the southbound lanes of Rose Ave. at Tiesa Dr.
 
Officers screened 1,232 motorists who passed through the checkpoint locations and conducted seven DUI investigations with drivers who had been drinking alcohol.  Five drivers were driving under the influence of alcohol and arrested. One driver was arrested for an outstanding DUI warrant.
 
Citations were issued to fifty-four drivers for various driver’s license violations at the checkpoint.  Thirty-seven drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and three drivers were cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license.  Fifteen vehicles were towed from the checkpoint.
 
The Oxnard Police Department will continue to conduct DUI enforcement operations in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related collisions on our roadways. We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911.  These DUI enforcement operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.
 
The Oxnard Police Department will conduct another multi-location sobriety and license checkpoint on Saturday, December 17, 2011. The checkpoints will be setup at undisclosed locations in Oxnard. They will begin at 7:00 P.M. and end at 3:00 A.M.

On January 7, 2012, at about 7 a.m, members of the Oxnard PD Narcotics Unit and Special Enforcement Unit served a narcotics search warrant in the 400 block of North Grant Avenue in Oxnard. The search warrant was the result of a three-month investigation into the sale of rock cocaine at the residence.  
 
During the search of the residence detectives located paraphernalia related to the sale of drugs; more than four ounces of marijuana; three ounces of cocaine; two small-caliber handguns and seized about two thousand dollars for asset forfeiture. The estimated street value of the drugs seized is more than ten thousand dollars.
 
Salvador Valdivia, 24, was arrested for possession of cocaine for sale and several weapons violations. Orlando Reyes, 28, was also arrested during the search warrant. Reyes was charged with possession of methamphetamine for sale and three felony warrants.

On Saturday, February 25, 2012 at about 5:17 a.m., Oxnard PD received information from a concerned citizen that a suspicious subject was trying to gain entry into a tented residence in the 2000 block of South “K” Street. This particular residence was tented for fumigation purposes.
 
Oxnard police officers responded and located Javier Romo, 23, in the backyard of the residence. During the investigation it was discovered that the tent had been cut to allow access into the residence. Romo was in possession of burglary tools and narcotics paraphernalia and was subsequently arrested. 
 
The specific details provided by the caller assisted police in making this arrest. This is a good reminder for any concerned citizen to call 9-1-1 to report suspicious activity.

Oxnard Police Department Targets Impaired Drivers with DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint
 
Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over
 
Oxnard, CA – Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Friday, May 25th, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public. 
 
Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
 
All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. “Over the course of the past year, DUI collisions have claimed 1 life and resulted in 187 wrecks injuring 91 of our friends and neighbors in Oxnard,” said Senior Officer Brown.
 
This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies and officers will be checking drivers for proper licensing.   A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effect it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired and bring about more awareness, encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers. 
 
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.
 
Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

(Oxnard, CA) The Oxnard Police Activities League Dinner Auction Fundraiser will take place on March 24, 2012 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center in Oxnard. This is the fifth annual event which dedicates 100 percent of every dollar raised to support local youth – no administration or overhead costs.
 
The Oxnard Police Activities League (PAL) is a city-wide, after-school crime prevention program designed to build positive relationships between youth, police officers and the community. PAL offers free programs for youth ages seven to 18 and a low-cost soccer league for youth ages three to 19. PALs mission is to divert youth away from gangs and other criminal activity by providing a wide variety of positive alternatives under the care and supervision of trained police officers, recreation staff and community volunteers.
 
Two outstanding PAL youth members will be recognized at this year’s event as well as many members of the community who support PAL in a variety of ways. The recognition categories include: charity of the year, distinguished donor of the year, community and corporate sponsors of the year and business person of the year. In addition, PAL will recognize several special honorees.

The two youth of the year to be recognized at this year’s event are Mayte Alonso and Kevin Alanis. Mayte is an eighth grade Blackstock Junior High School student who has been a PAL member for two years. Mayte is ASB president at her school and an honors student who carries a 4.0 grade point average. She is the president of her chapter of PALs Youth Director’s Council and hopes to become a lawyer. Her goal is to attend UCLA and transfer to Harvard Law School.

Kevin is a junior at Hueneme High School and is also the president of his chapter of PALs Youth Director’s Council. Kevin has been a PAL member for six years. He is very active in academic clubs as well as being a student athlete. He competes in cross-country, basketball, track and golf. Kevin is Hueneme High School’s junior class president.
 
PAL is still accepting donations of auction items or cash. At this point, some of the auction items include: lunch with the Oxnard police chief, an unlimited movie pass, event and theme park tickets, romantic dinners, dinner at an Oxnard Fire station. (Oxnard, CA) This morning at about 6:15, Oxnard PD officers received a call of a street robbery that occurred in the 2000 block of Lantana Street. A 17-year-old male was robbed at knifepoint as he walked down the street. The suspects physically held the victim while removing personal property from the victim’s pockets. One suspect was armed with a metal pipe and the other with a knife. Just before fleeing, the suspect armed with the pipe struck the victim on the head, causing a minor injury. Both suspects fled on foot.
 
The suspects are two Hispanic males between 15 and 18 years of age, about 5-11, 160 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes. Both had mustaches, thin builds, and medium complexions.

(Oxnard, CA) On June 5, 2012 at about 9:45 p.m., a green Ford Focus was left running (keys in the ignition) in the 1600 block of Oneida Place in front of the car owner’s residence. When the owner discovered that the Ford was stolen, he reported it to Oxnard PD. Officers later observed the car driving southbound on Ventura Road at Holly Avenue. The suspect, 26-year-old Efren Sarinana, failed to yield and a short pursuit ensued. When Sarinana began to drive recklessly the pursuit was cancelled in the interest of public safety.
 
Officers spotted the Ford turned west on Ivywood Drive from Ventura Road. They searched the area and located the car in the 1500 block of Sophia Court. A short foot pursuit ensued and the suspect was taken into custody in the 1500 block of Joanne Court. During the investigation officers learned that Sarinana crashed into a parked vehicle in the 1500 block of Gina Drive while he was trying to evade police. They also learned that Sarinana is on parole.
 
Oxnard PD reminds residents not to leave their vehicles unattended with the keys in the ignition.
