DETAILS: The Avoid the 14 DUI Task Force is deploying officers this holiday weekend at DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols countywide to stop and arrest drunk or drugged drivers and to heighten awareness of the deadly combination that alcohol, drugs, and driving can have on this first holiday weekend of the summer season.

Along with warm weather and start of the vacation season, it’s also the season for college and high school graduations. The start of the summer season on this 3-day holiday weekend will find law enforcement reminding everyone to make plans now for those weekend trips and celebrations. Make sure to use a ‘Designated Sober Driver’ to prevent arrest or worse, a deadly driving tragedy.

The County’s DUI Task Force kicks off Friday night by deploying DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints in the cities of Ventura and Oxnard with special DUI saturation patrols deploying over the weekend in the cities of Ojai, Moorpark, Camarillo, Simi Valley, Fillmore, Thousand Oaks and Oxnard. The California Highway Patrol is also deploying all available officers Memorial Day weekend onto freeways and county roads as part of their maximum enforcement period.

Over the 2013 Memorial Day weekend, the Oxnard Police Department investigated 31 traffic collisions. Only one of them involved a drunk driver and fortunately, no injuries were involved.

In addition to the Memorial Day DUI crackdown, law enforcement nationwide is looking to stop and ticket those who have failed to buckle up or secure young passengers. Remember, Click It or Ticket!

Funding for the Avoid DUI Task Force is by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Avoid Task Force will deploy checkpoints and DUI patrols next during the Independence Day Holiday and for the summer August/Labor Day DUI Mobilization.

DETAILS: On the above date and time, Oxnard Police officers responded to Charles Street and Campbell Way regarding a shooting victim. The initial investigation indicates that the victim was outside his home talking on his phone when he was approached by two men. The men attempted to rob him by demanding he give them his personal belongings. The victim refused and at some point, one of the suspects produced a handgun and shot the victim. The two suspects fled on foot and the victim ran inside his home to get help. The victim was transported via ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound. He underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition.

DETAILS:

On 12-27-14, at 0259 hours, an officer observed a young man on Pine Street near Watt Avenue and attempted to make contact with him. The 17 year old juvenile immediately fled on foot and hid in a nearby doorway. The suspect was detained without incident and questioned about why he ran away. During the conversation, the officer realized that he had discarded a loaded handgun in the doorway. The juvenile was arrested and lodged into the Juvenile Justice Center for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

In an effort to address the increase in firearms-related crimes, the Oxnard Police Department launched the Operation Safer and Stronger Initiative, as well as the Firearms Strike Team (FAST) led by the Violent Crime Unit, to proactively remove firearms from prohibited persons within the city. The objective of this initiative and FAST is to reduce gun violence in Oxnard through education, intervention, and enforcement.

INCIDENT:	Arrest of Post Release Offender for Felony Evading and Possession of Narcotics

DETAILS:

On December 28, 2014, at about 4:30 p.m., members from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Ventura Road and Anna Way for traffic violations. The vehicle immediately fled and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle collided with a curb in the area of Ebony Drive and Lions Gate Drive rendering the vehicle inoperative. The driver, Brandon Guerra, fled from the vehicle and was apprehended a short distance away. The passengers, Ruben Martinez and Crystal Sapien, were detained at the stop.

Guerra was arrested for felony evading of police officers and possession of methamphetamine, Ruben Martinez was arrested for an outstanding warrant, and Crystal Sapien was arrested for narcotics paraphernalia.
Guerra is currently in the Post Release Offender Program, created by Assembly Bill 109 – the 2011 Public Safety Realignment – which was effective October 1, 2011. This program mandates that individuals sentenced to non-violent, non-serious or non-sex offenses will serve their sentences in county jails instead of state prison. The public should be aware that release under AB 109 is based on the offender’s most recent commitment offense, prior convictions arenot considered.

As school is now back in session after the holiday break and students are again traveling to and from school on the city’s streets, the Oxnard Police Department wants to place an emphasis on pedestrian and bicycle safety. The safe travel of pedestrians and bicyclists on our city’s roadways is everyone’s responsibility. Certain precautions can be taken to reduce the number and severity of collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrians are reminded to obey regulatory traffic signs and only travel in areas where it is permitted and safe to walk. Bicyclists should wear an appropriate helmet at all times to minimize injuries in the case of a collision or fall. Tragically, 95 children under the age of 14 were killed in traffic related crashes in California in 2012.

This morning, January 13^th, the Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a pedestrian and bicycle safety operation in the area of Oxnard Boulevard and Gonzales Road between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Both uniformed and undercover officers participated in this operation which specifically focused on violations related to pedestrian and bicycle safety.

During the operation, officers issued 25 citations to pedestrians who illegally trespassed by crossing over the railroad tracks in areas where such crossing is dangerous and prohibited. Three citations were issued to bicyclists and skateboarders for not wearing a helmet. Pedestrians are reminded and encouraged to only cross railroad tracks where prohibited and when safe. Bicyclists and skateboarders, under the age of 18, are reminded that they are required by law to wear a helmet while riding.

On 05/15/14 at approximately 0221 hours, Oxnard police officers responded to the area of Roderick Avenue and Carty Drive in Oxnard reference an auto burglary in progress.

Officers arrived and located the three suspects in the area, who matched the description provided by a witness. It was learned the suspects were walking on Roderick Avenue checking for vehicles with unlocked doors. The suspects found several vehicle doors unlocked and began removing property from one of them, just prior to the Police arriving.

The Oxnard Police Department encourages residents to be partners in public safety as part of the Operation Safer and Stronger initiative. This is an excellent example of a witness who saw suspicious activity, called the police, and provided the appropriate information.

DETAILS:
On June 3, 2014, at approximately 11:20 P.M., Oxnard Police Officers responded to a call for service related to a man down in the area of Wooley Road and Richmond Avenue. They arrived on scene and found an unconscious male subject lying near the roadway. Emergency medical personnel also responded, but unfortunately the male victim was determined to be deceased.

The Oxnard Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this death. An autopsy examination is scheduled to take place on June 4, 2014.

Update:
On June 4, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s office conducted an autopsy on victim Carlos Marrero Alvarado. The results of the examination revealed that victim Alvarado died as a result of injuries consistent with a traffic collision. The Oxnard Police Department is now investigating this incident as a hit and run collision as the vehicle involved fled the scene. It is unknown what time the collision occurred.

DETAILS: On the above date and time Oxnard PD patrol officers responded to the Union 76 Gas Station at 3650 Saviers Rd. regarding an armed robbery with a handgun that had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers learned that the above described suspect had entered the business, brandished a handgun at the clerk, and demanded cash. The suspect fled the business on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash to a vehicle driven by a second suspect. The suspect vehicle was last seen northbound on Samuel Ave. The suspect vehicle was described as a small dark SUV. There was no description on the driver.

On Tuesday, September 02, 2014, Oxnard Police responded to a stabbing victim near the intersection of 2^ndStreet and B Street. Upon arrival, an adult male victim was found outside a motorhome. The victim had been stabbed once in the back and was transported to VCMC where he is listed in stable condition. Rosario Nunez, the suspect, was arrested at the scene and booked into County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. It appears this incident stemmed from a domestic dispute involving the two individuals.

The Independence Day Weekend Anti-DUI crackdown is reporting DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 14 DUI deployments in Ventura County.

Over the four-day July 4^th holiday weekend, officers representing 14 Ventura County law enforcement agencies arrested 46 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol, two drivers for drug impairment and two drivers for driving while under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. An additional five individuals were arrested for outstanding DUI related arrest warrants. There were no alcohol-involved fatalities reported and only one person sustained injuries from a DUI related collision that occurred in the City of Port Hueneme.

Law enforcement officials will be conducting more Avoid Anti-DUI efforts throughout Ventura County during the 18 day summer campaign starting August 15^th and ending after Labor Day weekend.
