(Oxnard, CA) UPDATE 1:04 p.m.Victoria Avenue is still closed to traffic between Wooley Road and Channel Islands Boulevard. We will open the traffic lanes as soon as possible but we do not have an estimated time at this point.
 
The only additional information we are releasing at this time is that there were five Ventura County deputies involved in the shooting and four Oxnard Police officers involved. Because of the ongoing investigation we are not releasing any additional details on the incident.
 
UPDATE 9:20 a.m. – Victoria Avenue will remain closed between Wooley Road and Channel Islands Boulevard because of the pursuit and officer-involved shooting. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes until further notice.
  
The female who was the original victim of domestic violence (the incident that started this chain of events) was not seriously injured. She was not transported to a hospital.
Last night just after the final shooting incident happened, there were two women who were handcuffed and removed from the crime scene on Victoria Ave. The two women are family members of the suspect who were interfering with the officers and for that reason were handcuffed and taken away from the crime scene. They were not arrested.
 
The suspect has been transferred to a hospital in the Santa Barbara area. We do not have information on his condition and his name will not be released at this point. The suspect could face the following charges: 273.5 PC (domestic violence); felony failure to yield; and attempted homicide.
 
[Original news release] At about 8 p.m. on October 24, 2011 Oxnard PD received a call regarding a domestic violence incident taking place in the 200 block of Roderick Avenue. Oxnard officers arrived on scene, but the suspect fled prior to their arrival.  A firearm had been mentioned, and officers believed the suspect was armed.  Officers were able to determine that a crime had occurred.
 
At about 9 p.m., Ventura County Sheriff’s (VCSO) deputies were involved in a pursuit with the suspect in his vehicle on Highway 33.  It was reported that the suspect had fired at the deputies as he drove. The suspect then traveled onto Highway 101 and headed south. When he reached Seaward and Highway 101, the suspect fired at the deputies, who returned fire. The suspect got back onto Highway 101 and exited in Oxnard at Vineyard Avenue. He returned to the Roderick Avenue residence and fired shots at that location. No one was injured from this action.
 
The suspect eventually made his way (with Oxnard PD and VCSO deputies in pursuit) to the Marina Village area in Port Hueneme. The suspect continued north on Victoria Avenue where he again exchanged gunfire; this time with VCSO deputies and Oxnard PD officers. The suspect was struck by gunfire, and was transported to a local hospital.
 
The name of the suspect and his condition is not being released at this time. The name of the victim will not be released as she is a domestic violence victim and her identity is protected by law.
 
Neither Oxnard officers nor VCSO deputies sustained injuries. Two people who were not involved in the incident received minor injuries from flying glass. One of those individuals was taken to the hospital for treatment.
 
Oxnard PD is the lead agency on this incident. VCSO deputies, detectives and officers from Port Hueneme Police are assisting.
 
At the time of this release, Victoria Avenue is closed from Wooley Road to Channel Islands Boulevard.  It is anticipated that it will remain closed until further notice.

DETAILS:

On November 14, 2011 at about 8 a.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing victim in the 5200 block of Saviers Road. Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old victim with several stab wounds. The victim was transported to VCMC where he received medical treatment. His injuries are not life threatening. The victim’s name is not releasable because he is a juvenile.
 
The suspects were described as four males in a full-size white four-door sedan with window tint. The suspect who stabbed the victim was described as a Hispanic male about 19 years old, 5’9″ tall, 160 lbs. and clean shaven. He was wearing a black hat, blue sweatshirt, blue shorts and long white socks. No descriptions of the other three suspects were available.

(Oxnard, CA)The Oxnard Police Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for a year-long, anti-DUI program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways.  New enforcement measures to reduce impaired driving have been implemented as a result of a recent $250,000 grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety. The Oxnard Police Department is dedicated to keeping our streets safe through both enforcement and education.
 
The special DUI Enforcement and Awareness grant will assist in efforts to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and other drug related collisions. The grant activities will specifically target impaired driving offenders as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving. This will be accomplished through the use of DUI/driver’s license checkpoints, warrant searches and stakeouts for repeat DUI offenders, saturation patrols, and court stings targeting DUI offenders with suspended or revoked driver’s licenses who get behind the wheel after leaving court. 
 
California saw a decline in overall traffic deaths in 2010, marking the fifth year in a row of safer roads. According to federal government figures, total vehicle fatalities dropped 11.9 percent, from 3,081 in 2009 to 2,715 in 2010. Since 2005 when the number of fatalities was 4,333, the 2010 figures show a total decline of 37.3 percent.
 
The city of Oxnard has seen similar reductions in traffic fatalities in 2011. As of November 2011, there have been a total of three fatalities, as compared to 2010, with five fatalities. The 2011 figures show a total decline of 40 percent.
 
Funding for this program is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration. The funding period began October 1, 2011 and runs through September 30, 2012.

On December 14, 2011 at about 8:30 a.m., Oxnard PD officers responded to a call of suspicious circumstances in the 5000 block of Corbina Way. Officers made contact with a male victim who told police that on December 13 at about 11:15 p.m. he was confronted by a man inside of his residence. The male victim told police that he was home with his girlfriend when Kevin Graehl entered the male victim’s home through an unlocked back door. Once inside, Graehl pointed a rifle at the male victim and bound him with tape.
 
Eventually the suspect released the male victim and took the female victim to his residence in Westlake Village. The female escaped in the early morning hours of December 14 and notified police.
 
On December 14, Oxnard PD detectives from the Family Protection Unit began an investigation that culminated in the arrest of the suspect by the Oxnard Special Enforcement Unit on December 15 near the suspect’s residence in Westlake Village. The suspect was booked at the Ventura County Jail and charged with burglary, kidnapping, domestic violence, stalking and committing a felony while armed with a firearm.

On February 1, 2012, at about 5 a.m., an Oxnard PD officer was on routine patrol in the area of Justin Road and Bard Road when he noticed a green 1996 Ford Ranger pick-up truck driving without its headlamps on and failing to stop for a stop sign at that intersection. The officer tried to stop the vehicle by activating his overhead emergency lights and siren. The driver refused to yield and a short vehicle pursuit began. The vehicle stopped in the 2600 block of Arcadia Street. The driver and two passengers attempted to flee. The two passengers, both juveniles, were caught and arrested. The driver eluded the officers.
 
No one was injured and there were no collisions as a result of this pursuit.

(Oxnard, CA) The Oxnard Police Department is investigating nine cases of residential burglary that have occurred to homes which are tented for the purposes of fumigation. These cases began on January 25, 2012. The most recent case occurred on February 25 on South “K” Street. In that case, 23-year-old Javier Romo was arrested however, detectives believe Romo is not the only individual committing these burglaries.
 
The suspect(s) are cutting a hole in the fumigation tent and removing personal property from inside the homes. The burglaries have occurred in the following neighborhoods: Hobson Park West, Marina West, Via Marina, Channel Islands, Bartolo Square North, Cabrillo. Detectives believe the burglaries are happening during evening hours.
 
Oxnard PD reminds residents to report suspicious individuals who are loitering or wandering around neighborhoods. Residents are also reminded to record vital information about their valuables, such as serial numbers and model numbers. Taking photographs of your personal property is another way of maintaining a record for your insurance company.
 
If you are going to have your home tented for fumigation, please ask the company to fax the information to the Oxnard PD so that officers can increase patrol in the area.

(Oxnard, CA) On Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 6 a.m. through Sunday, March 4 at 6 p.m. Gonzales Road east of Oxnard Boulevard at the railroad crossing will be closed. This closure is required for maintenance of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
 
Motorists are advised to avoid the area but if you must be in this area on Saturday or Sunday, there will be posted signage indicating the following detour routes:

If you are traveling east on Gonzales Road toward Oxnard Boulevard you must either take a right (south) or left (north). If you go south you will be directed to Fifth Street and then east to Rose Avenue.

If you are traveling east on Gonzales Road toward Oxnard Boulevard and you decide to go north, the signs will direct you to Vineyard Avenue, south on the 101 freeway to the Rose Avenue exit.

If you access the Toppers Pizza center located on the north west corner of Gonzales Road and Oxnard Boulevard, you will be directed to exit using Bahia Drive south and then choose which direction you will go on Gonzales Road.

Oxnard PD traffic officers will be in the area during peak hours to address any traffic congestion issues should they arise.
 
Additional railroad maintenance closures will occur over the next few weeks and the public will be notified in advance of those closures.

(Oxnard, CA) On March 7, 2012 at about 1:25 p.m. Oxnard PD officers received a call regarding a carjacking in the area of Haycox Elementary School at 5400 Perkins Road. The victim, a 25-year-old Oxnard resident, said she was picking up her 5-year-old son from school when two Hispanic males approached her and demanded her car by pushing her away from it. The victim’s vehicle is a 2002 black Nissan Sentra. The victim says both suspects got into her car and left northbound on Perkins Road and then westbound on Clara Street. The victim immediately notified the police. Officers checked the area but were not able to find the suspects or the stolen car. The victim and her son were not injured.
 
On March 14, 2012 at about 9:35 a.m. Oxnard PD officers received a call that the suspect vehicle was spotted in the area of Patterson Road and Channel Islands Boulevard near the McDonald’s restaurant in the city of Port Hueneme. Officers responded to the area and located the stolen Nissan. As officers attempted to pull the car over, the suspect immediately accelerated. Officers initiated a two minute pursuit where the suspect eventually ran into a curb and a stop sign at the corner of Pierwalk and Victoria Avenue. The suspect ran from the stolen Nissan but was caught a short distance away.
 
The suspect is Joey Ixta, 19. He was identified as the suspect who carjacked the Nissan on March 7. Ixta faces the following charges: carjacking, failure to yield, hit and run, and delaying and obstructing peace officers in the performance of their duties.

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a multi-location sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, March 23, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.    
 
The first checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lanes of Ventura Road at Devonshire Drive. The second checkpoint was held in the southbound lanes of Rose Ave at Cesar Chavez Drive.
 
Officers screened 1,247 motorists who passed through the checkpoint locations and conducted five DUI investigations with drivers who had been drinking alcohol. Officers arrested four drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol and one driver for an outstanding warrant.
 
Citations were issued to 11 drivers for various drivers’ license violations. Eleven drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and one driver was cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license. Thirteen drivers were cited for other violations. Six vehicles were towed from the checkpoint.
 
Oxnard PD will continue to conduct DUI enforcement operations in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related collisions on our roadways. We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911. These DUI enforcement operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.
