DETAILS:

On 7-11-13, at 4:25 P.M., Oxnard police officers attempted to stop a motorist for a traffic violation in the area of Hobson Way and 9^th Street. The vehicle sped away. A brief pursuit
ensued which covered less than one mile. When speeds reached 60 MPH on surface streets the pursuit was cancelled by officers in the interest of public safety.

The vehicle continued speeding S/B on “J” Street thru Wooley Road running a red light. The driver was seen by witnesses discarding illegal drugs out the vehicle window.

When the vehicle attempted to turn at “J” Street onto Guava Street it hit a curb and rolled over. Officers arrived on scene and arrested Post-Release Offender (PRO) Joseph Fry Senior, a 37-year old Oxnard resident. Fry suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision. No other persons were injured.

Fry was wanted for a misdemeanor warrant. Fry is also being held on a violation related to the “Post-release Offender Program” (PRO) which releases non-violent, and non-serious offenders from prison pursuant to Assembly Bill 109. Fry was charged with possession and transportation of illegal substances.

DETAILS: ( Oxnard, CA) With the beginning of school in Oxnard, the Oxnard Police Department would like to notify residents of increased traffic during peak times at all local elementary, middle, and high schools.

“This is always an exciting time of year for many in our city,” said Oxnard Police Chief Jeri Williams. “Children, parents, pedestrians, drivers, and crossing guards are encouraged to exercise safety-first as our families return to school,” she added.

The Oxnard Police Department has heard from community members and leaders who want to remind parents to give themselves extra time during school peak times to alleviate traffic or more dangerous conditions. Drivers are reminded that it is illegal to double and triple park to drop off or pick up students, and illegal U-turns are not only illegal, they can be dangerous.

Parents are reminded to drive carefully around school buses and children, and to be extra vigilant to ensure the continued safety of our school children and school crossing guards this time of year.

Oxnard Police remind drivers that it is very important to obey the posted speed limit and pay close attention to their surroundings at all times. Within a school zone, it is especially important to be alert, drive carefully, and follow the directions of the crossing guards.

Drivers should expect delays near school this week. We encourage drivers to know your route, give yourself an extra 15 minutes, and drive the posted speed limit.

Further, families are reminded to park only in lawful areas, drop-off children onto sidewalk or right-side of the vehicle—unloading school children into a traffic lane could put a child in harm’s way. We also encourage you to remind children to remain alert and look left, right, and then left again before crossing the street.

On September 9, 2013 at about 1530 hours, Oxnard Police Department officers responded to a call of a shooting in the area of Courtland and Clara Streets in Oxnard. Responding officers were unable to locate a crime scene or a victim.

At about 1630 hours, a victim from the shooting incident arrived at Ventura County Medical Center with a single gunshot wound. The wound was not life-threatening. Officers were unable to learn much about the shooting, other than a possible suspect vehicle may have been a dark compact car.

DETAILS:

At about 1622 hours, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to the robbery of the business, the 76 gas station, at 3650 Saviers Road. Officers learned that the suspect, described as a Hispanic male, appr. 30 years old, about 5’09”, wearing a black sweatshirt, blue jeans, and wearing a surgical mask entered the business with a handgun and demanded money. The clerk gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash, and the suspect fled the area on a bicycle. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

This same business was robbed last week by a suspect of a similar description.

DETAILS: On 11/13/13 at approximately 1500 hours, Oxnard police officers were patrolling the 1100 block of West Kamala Street when several citizens flagged down the police. The citizens told the officers that there were several subjects in the neighborhood that were harassing other people.

The offices obtained a description of the subjects and began looking for them. A patrol officer located a subject matching the description given by the citizens. The subject ran into the backyard of a residence where he was detained by police. The subject was found to be juvenile and in possession of a loaded firearm. The juvenile was arrested for several firearms violations.

At about 2100 hours, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to the 100 block of South Grant Avenue regarding a fight where one subject may have been in possession of handgun. As officers arrived, one subject fled from the officers. Officers did not locate this subject, but did find a loaded handgun that appeared to have been discarded.

Officers checked the area but were unable to locate a victim or any witnesses.

At 2239 hours, Oxnard Police Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1800 Block of Napoleon Avenue. Officers arrived on scene and located evidence of a shooting.

A short time later, a call of a shooting victim at St. John’s hospital was received. Officers arrived at the hospital and contacted the victim, Robert Michel (31 years) and additional witnesses. The victim’s injuries were not life threatening.

The suspect vehicle was described as a newer model dark blue Toyota Corolla or Tercel with tinted windows, driven by a Hispanic male with a goatee, and red hat. It was unknown if there were additional occupants.

On January 25, 2014 at 0402 hours, Officer Steve Eckman was driving westbound on Channel Islands Blvd. at Raiders Way when he saw a confirmed stolen vehicle turn eastbound on Channel Islands Blvd. from Raiders Way. The vehicle had been reported stolen at 0120 hours from the 600 block of South Oxnard Blvd. Upon seeing the police unit, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed eastbound on Channel Island Blvd. Officer Eckman then activated his lights and siren and initiated a vehicle pursuit.

The suspect, later identified as Andy Franco, led Officer Eckman on a brief two minute vehicle pursuit into the Lemonwood Neighborhood of Oxnard. The pursuit came to an end on Beaufort Drive north of Ives Avenue when the suspect stopped abruptly. When the suspect stopped, a slow speed collision occurred between Officer Eckman’s police unit and the suspect vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident after the slow speed collision. There were no injuries. Damage to both vehicles was minor.

The suspect, Andy Franco, is a repeat auto theft offender being both the driver and passenger in prior stolen vehicle investigations. Franco was booked into the Ventura County Jail for Auto Theft 10851 CVC and Felony Evading 2800.2(a) CVC.

DETAILS: The Super Bowl is one of America’s most highly anticipated sports events, when friends and family gather in homes, bars and restaurants to celebrate. As game day approaches and football fans across the country prepare for the game, the National Football League (NFL) the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have joined forces with the Ventura County Avoid the 14 DUI Task Force to spread the message about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday, because – Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

“Several officers throughout Ventura County will be dedicated to DUI enforcement before, during and after the game. No matter what team you want to win, everyone is a winner on Superbowl Sunday if the right choice is made to designate a sober driver before kick-off,” said Brian Woolley, Traffic Sergeant for the Oxnard Police Department.

Nationally in 2012, alcohol-impaired-driving crashes took 10,322 lives. Californians witnessed 802 deaths in DUI crashes on their streets and highways. These crashes were 31 percent more likely to occur on weekends than on weekdays.

The Ventura County Avoid the 14 Coalition will be deploying special DUI Saturation Patrols in communities around the county. Every regularly scheduled patrol officer working will be watching for the tell-tale signs of impaired driving before, during and after the game.

Whether watching at a bar or hosting a party, the NFL, the Office of Traffic Safety, NHTSA, and the Ventura County Avoid DUI Task Force reminds everyone that Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk. Before choosing to drink, choose your team’s MVP – a sober designated driver.

DETAILS:
On January 31, 2014, at about 1755 hours, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to St. John’s Regional Medical Center reference a gunshot victim. Officers contacted the victim, Armando Rivera, 25 years old of Oxnard, who told them that he, and two friends, were walking in the 300 block of West Hueneme Road when they were confronted by two subjects. After a short verbal exchange, shots were fired from a small caliber handgun and the victim received a single, non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was driven to St. John’s Regional Medical Center by an unknown person.

The Oxnard Police Department received information that a black Nissan Maxima or similar type vehicle may have been involved in the incident.

An investigation is continuing.
