On 5/14/10 around 8:35 PM officers were dispatched to a call of a stabbing in the 900 block of South Ventura Rd. Upon arrival, they located two victims that were suffering from stab wounds. One victim was stabbed in the chest and abdomen while the other had suffered a superficial stab wound to his arm. Both victims were transported to St John’s Regional Medical Center. The 18 year-old victim went into emergency surgery where he is listed in critical condition.

It appears that the assault was tagger / gang motivated. The two names of the victims are being withheld to avoid any gang retaliation. The suspect was arrested in a nearby park by special enforcement and patrol officers.

During an interview the suspect admitted his involvement in the incident. He was booked at Ventura County Jail for attempt murder and a gang allegation. Investigators recovered the weapon used during follow-up investigation.

On 7-27-10, at approximately 5:32 P.M., officers were dispatched to Farmacia Estrella “Star Pharmacy” located at 5020 South “C” St. reference an armed robbery. Officers discovered two subjects entered the pharmacy and immediately went behind the counter. The suspects ordered the owner to open up the cabinets containing different medications. The suspects wore unknown colored bandanas that covered their face, hooded sweatshirts, and gloves.

The suspects took an unknown amount of medication and fled the store. Witnesses observed the suspects run across the street and got into a Tan or light brown vehicle. The suspect vehicle drove away northbound on “C” St. from Pleasant Valley Rd. There was no description of the suspect driver.

On 08/21/2010 at approximately 1853 hours officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of South “L” Street regarding an assault victim. When officers arrived they located the victim who had moderate facial injuries. The victim was transported to Saint John’s Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries and is listed in stable condition.

During the course of the investigation it was revealed that the victim and suspect were roommates and had a dispute over money. The suspect fled the scene but later showed up at the police station to turn himself in. The suspect was identified as Ramiro Montes (6/5/76). He was arrested and booked at the Ventura County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem.

On October 20, 2010, the Oxnard Police Department is hosting a business owners/managers meeting for the “Crime Free business program.”

This program is part of a nationwide study designed to lower crime and violence in small business establishments across the country. Some of the goals are achieved by networking the police department and businesses throughout the City of Oxnard. This meeting is recommended for business owners, managers, and employees. The program is free and joining can lead to lowered liability insurance rates. The program is open to all businesses.

This program has proven to be successful in lowering crime, making businesses less susceptible to criminal attack, and increasing profitability.

The meeting hours are from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. on the second floor of the Oxnard Police Department located at 251 S. C St., Oxnard.

On 10-2-10 at about 5:50 a.m., officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress to an automobile parked in the 1700 block of Joanne Way. When officers arrived, they found that a 17-year old male juvenile from Oxnard was being detained by several residents after the juvenile was seen jumping out of a back yard where he had attempted to hide until he was discovered by the family’s large watchdog prompting him to leave his hiding place. A second suspect, an Hispanic male in his 20’s (no further description), had fled the area prior to officers’ arrival in an older blue Honda 4-door and is still being sought.

The subsequent investigation determined that one parked vehicle had been entered and property removed and two other vehicles nearby had entry attempted. The juvenile was found to be in possession of property stolen for the vehicle that had been entered. He was lodged into Juvenile Hall for grand theft, attempted auto burglary, and possession of stolen property – all felony charges.

With the holidays upon us and millions of Americans hitting the roads, The Oxnard Police Department wants everyone to arrive safely at their destinations. Drivers and passengers need to know that officers will be out in force sending the strong message to “Click It or Ticket”.

“No one wants to start the holidays off wrong with a ticket,” said Assistant Chief Scott Whitney, from the Oxnard Police Department.

While seat belt use is at a record high of 83 percent nationwide, 45 million Americans still fail to buckle up when they get in a motor vehicle. Even though in California 96.2 percent use their restraints, it still means that over 1.5 million Californians don’t buckle up. Oxnard police officers issued 429 motorists citations for failing to buckle up during the last Click It or Ticket campaign held earlier this year in May.

During the holiday period, over 35 vehicle occupants who are not buckled up will be killed in motor vehicle crashes each day nationwide. Statewide, overall traffic deaths declined by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009 due in part to the increased use of seat belts. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades.

“Sadly, the holidays, are one of the deadliest times of the year for our motorists,” said Chief Whitney.

“Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes,” said Christopher J. Murphy Director of the California Office of Traffic safety. “Law enforcement estimates indicate that over 1300 Californians survived by buckling up last year. Sadly however, about 150 others will not be gathering with families during the holidays because they choose not to use their seat belts.”

National statistics also show that those least likely to buckle up are teens, young adults, males, nighttime riders, motorists traveling on rural roads, and individuals traveling in pickup trucks.

More than 100 local law enforcement agencies statewide and the CHP will be participating in this year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization. Funding to support California’s Click It or Ticket campaign was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Oceanview Pavilion proudly presents 2nd Annual charity boxing challenge, “Battle of the Badges”. The proceeds will be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme, Oxnard Police Activities League and the Volunteers in Policing. The event will be held in Port Hueneme, CA on Saturday, December 11th. The charity boxing event will feature deputy sheriffs and police officers versus firefighters from Ventura County.

This is a collaboration of efforts done in the spirit of giving by the Oceanview Pavilion and public safety professionals throughout Ventura County including the Oxnard Police Officers Association, Ventura County Deputy Sheriffs Association, Oxnard Firefighters Association and Ventura County Professional Firefighters Association.

Money raised will go to support the youth, our future America, at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme and the Oxnard Police Activities League. “The friendly Police versus Firefighter rivalry has been around for decades and we’re all excited to build on that to put on another entertaining evening of boxing for the benefit of these worthy organizations. The months of training leading to this event helps build camaraderie amongst our agencies and the event fulfills our natural inclination to give even more during the holiday season,” says Sergeant Marc Amon, member of the Oxnard Police Officers Association. “Oceanview Pavilion’s Performing Arts Theatre by the beach is honored to join hands with the Ventura County Firefighters Association, Ventura County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Oxnard Police Officers Association and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme,” said Sharon Kloeris, Executive Vice President of Marketing.

On 01-05-2011 at 5:41 A.M. Officers received a call of a vehicle struck by a train at the Wagon Wheel railroad crossing. Upon officer’s arrival to the location, it was discovered that Oxnard resident Marcos Sotelo age 19, attempted to drive his 1991 Jeep Cherokee across the railroad tracks and became stuck on the tracks. Sotelo was able to escape the vehicle, just prior to his vehicle being struck by a southbound Metro-Link train, traveling at an estimated speed of 50 MPH. Sotelo’s vehicle was pushed for a distance of 150 Yards. Sotelo and the nine Metro-Link passengers were uninjured in the crash. The Metro-Link was delayed for approximately two hours. Sotelo was arrested for trespassing on railroad property and transported to the Oxnard Police department for questioning.

The public is reminded that, trespassing on railroad property is a misdemeanor and is punishable by Jail or Fine. Railroad property is defined as; land owned, leased, or possessed by a railroad upon which is placed a railroad track and the land immediately adjacent thereto, to the distance of 20 feet on either side of the track.
