Enhanced Traffic Enforcement results in 45 citations, 3 arrests, and 3 vehicles towed

On Thursday, June 29, 2017, between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted an enhanced traffic enforcement operation in response to recent complaints and traffic collisions related to illegal street racing, reckless driving, and unsafe vehicles operating on our roadways. The police department has received complaints from community members of large numbers of vehicles gathering and disturbing at different locations around the city. The Traffic Unit has also investigated four serious injury and fatal traffic collisions involving street racing, speeding, and unsafe driving this year.

During the four-hour traffic enforcement operation, officers issued 45 citations and three vehicles were towed. One driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and two drivers were arrested after they were observed being involved in an illegal street race.

Over the past several years, there has been an increased presence of these types of unsanctioned events in Oxnard and throughout the county. Street racing, drag racing, drifting, and other forms of unpermitted driving create a very dangerous environment for everyone on our roadways. We encourage these groups to find legal, permitted, and official locations to show their vehicles. However, unsafe vehicles and driving practices will not be tolerated, and those doing these acts will be subject to citations, vehicles being towed, and possibly arrested.

It is the mission of the Oxnard Police Department to promote traffic safety and to reduce the number of collisions in our community. The police department will continue these types of enforcement operations in an effort to make our roadways safer.

INCIDENT:	20th Annual Fireworks by the Sea at Channel Islands Harbor

 Oxnard, CA – This Tuesday, July 4^th, the Channel Islands Harbor District will be hosting its 20^th annual Fourth of July event.  The event will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a 5K & 10K Fun Run/Walk along Sunset Lane and Mandalay Beach Road.  This will be followed by the July 4^th Children’s Parade on Harbor Boulevard.  The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. and take place on Harbor Boulevard between Cabezone Circle and Albacore Way.  Harbor Boulevard will be closed to vehicular traffic during the parade.  Motorists can use Sunset Lane or Ocean Drive as an alternate route.

Activities and entertainment are scheduled throughout the day at the Channel Islands Harbor.  Marine Emporium Landing will have activities between 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., including live music, face painting, an inflatable fun zone, and a rock climbing wall.  There will also be vendors with booths as well as a farmer’s market.  This will be a family-oriented event with fun for all.  The event will end with a fireworks show that begins at 9:00 p.m. and can best be seen near the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard.

Public consumption of alcohol, possession, and use of fireworks, including those described as “Safe and Sane”, and use of flare ignition devices will not be tolerated.  All law enforcement agencies working the event will be conducting strict enforcement of all related offenses.

This event is expected to draw a large crowd and traffic delays are expected following the fireworks show.  The Oxnard Police Department will be handling traffic control to expedite the flow of traffic surrounding the event site.  Starting at 7:00 p.m., all intersections on Victoria Avenue and Harbor Boulevard from Fifth Street to the harbor area will be monitored by traffic officers.  The Channel Islands Bridge, between Victoria Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, is subject to closure prior to the fireworks display and will be closed after the fireworks display to facilitate the high traffic volume leaving the event.

In addition, the Oxnard Police Department would also like to notify the public that driving on any beach in the City of Oxnard is strictly prohibited.  From 5:00 p.m. on July 3^rd to noon on July 5^th, Arnold Road south of Hueneme Road will be closed to all vehicles with the exception of those who have legitimate business in that area or who are traveling to and from work.  Parking restrictions on Arnold Road will be strictly enforced.

If you live in the area of these roadways or intersections, we apologize for any inconvenience.  The roads will be re-opened as soon as possible.  These traffic flow modifications are taking place to assist in relieving the traffic congestion from this event in a timely and orderly fashion, with caution for pedestrians.

DUI Checkpoint Nets Four DUI Arrests

 

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on June 24, 2017, between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The checkpoint was located southbound Rose Avenue south of Tiesa Lane.  Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes. The Oxnard Police Department supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.”  If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI.  Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.

Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent).  Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

The following are the results of the DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint:

• 884 vehicles screened
• Four DUI-Alcohol suspects arrested
  • One of the impaired drivers was contacted after being involved in a collision. The driver was northbound Rose Avenue and almost veered into the southbound lanes but collided into a light pole and tree in the center divider several feet south of the checkpoint.
• 12 drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended
• 18 citations issued
• Four vehicles were towed

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone.  The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more.  The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

The Oxnard Police Department will be conducting additional DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Planned this Weekend

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes.  Oxnard PD supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.”  If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI.  Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.

The deterrent effect of High Visibility Enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols has proven to lower the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug-impaired crashes.  Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely.

DUI checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

In California, alcohol involved collisions led to 1,155 deaths and nearly 24,000 serious injuries in 2014 because someone failed to designate a sober driver.  Over the course of the past three years, Oxnard PD officers have investigated 739 DUI collisions which have claimed eight lives and resulted in another 485 injuries.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing, delaying motorists only momentarily.  When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.

The Oxnard Police Department conducts sobriety and license checkpoints in an effort to deter impaired driving.  It is not the Oxnard Police Department’s policy to utilize these checkpoints to enforce federal immigration laws.
