The Oxnard Police Department will be hosting its 19^th Annual Memorial Event on May 16, 2018 at 1030 hours. The Department welcomes the public to attend and celebrate the lives of seven Oxnard officers who lost their lives while in the line of duty. DETAILS:

On 5/8/18, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to an assault victim in the 400 block of W. Pleasant Valley Rd. Upon arrival, EMS personnel located a teenage male victim suffering from head injuries. The victim was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit are currently on scene conducting an investigation.

DETAILS:

On May 7, 2018, at approximately 3:26 a.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Gonzales Road and Ventura Road.

Officers contacted the driver, David Alvarez, and learned that he was on active probation with search terms. During the investigation, Officers conducted a probation search and located a loaded 12 gauge shotgun in the trunk of the vehicle. Alvarez was also found to be in possession of narcotics.

Alvarez was arrested for felony charges of being in possession of a concealed loaded firearm and narcotics.

On May 4, 2018, at approximately 9:00 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit contacted a known gang member riding a bicycle in the area of Del Sol Park located at 1500 Camino Del Sol. The subject was identified as Jose Rocha, a convicted felon and a person prohibited from possessing a firearm. Rocha was found to be in possession of a loaded .40 caliber handgun. He was arrested for several violations that include possessing a firearm while being a convicted felon or addict, possessing a firearm with a prior violent offence and illegally being in possession of ammunition.

On 5/4/18 at 12:36 PM Oxnard police officers were conducting a patrol of the 2900 block of Ocean Drive, the area of a recent homicide. Officers observed a parked vehicle and contacted the three occupants, one of which was on probation with search terms. Officers searched the vehicle and located a loaded semi-auto handgun near the driver’s seat. The driver, Pedro Ramirez, was arrested for possession of the handgun. The two other occupants were arrested for providing false information to a peace officer.

On April 28, 2018, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit and K-9 Unit contacted a group of subjects in the 500 block of L Court drinking alcohol in public and disturbing the peace. One of the subjects contacted was identified as Jorge Ortega. During a pat-down search for weapons, a loaded 38 revolver was located in the pocket of Ortega. He was taken into custody for without incident.

On April 26, 2018, at approximately 9:25 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement stop in the 1600 block of Billings Street. The subject was identified as Jose Sanchez. During the traffic stop, Sanchez was discovered to have an arrest warrant out of Los Angeles County. As Officers tried to remove Sanchez from his vehicle, Sanchez drove away. The two officers were hurt when the vehicle dragged the officers who tried to stop Sanchez from fleeing. One officer suffered an injury to his leg when the vehicle ran over his leg. Another officer suffered minor injuries from falling from the vehicle. Sanchez was located a short time later and arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting the duties of a police officer. Both officers were treated at a local hospital and released.

On April 26, 2018, at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit contacted a known gang member from Ventura in the area of Glenwood Drive and Oxnard Blvd. The subject was identified as Pablo Reyes. Reyes was driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of the City of Los Angeles. He was also found to have an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest. Reyes was taken into custody without incident.

S.E.U Officers responded to his residence in Ventura where they conducted a probation search. Officers found a loaded firearm in the bedroom belonging to Reyes along with items linking him to the Ventura Avenue gang. Reyes is prohibited from possessing a firearm and ammunition. He was additionally charged with those violations.

DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Planned this Friday

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, April 27, 2018, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

In California, this deadly crime led to 867 deaths and over 23,000 serious injuries in 2013 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Nationally, the latest data shows over 10,000 were killed by an impaired driver. Over the course of the past three years, Oxnard officers have investigated 638 DUI collisions, which have claimed eight lives and resulted in another 395 injuries.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.

Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment effects.

Law Enforcement emphasizes the preventable nature of drunk driving reminding everyone that all it takes is a little planning ahead. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. But whatever you do, don’t drink and drive. The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. Launched last year, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to “Map a Spot” with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in their area or a “List of Spots” to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Users will be offered free incentives at each bar to celebrate their life-saving role. They can stay up-to-date with the latest from DDVIP and see what other users are saying via its social tab. Also through the app, for those who want to imbibe but also make it a point to plan ahead, users can easily order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb – all from one screen.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Oxnard Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

On 4/25/18, at approximately 7:00 p.m., an armed suspect entered Walgreens, in the 2300 block of Vineyard Avenue, confronted an employee at gunpoint and demanded money. The employee handed over an undisclosed amount of currency. The suspect fled in an unknown direction. The suspect was described as a White, Male, 50-60 years old, 5-11, 160 lbs., brown ball cap, brown sweater, black jeans with a grey beard.
