SUBJECT: Gang Members Arrested for Possession of a Firearm and Controlled Substances for Sale

On June 14, at approximately 4:20 p.m., Officers from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit (gang unit) conducted a traffic stop of a black PT Cruiser in the south alley of the 1400 block of Isleton Way for a vehicle code violation. As officers approached the vehicle, officers saw that the driver of the vehicle was waving a handgun with his hand inside the car. The driver, Jaffet Gonzalez (19yrs), was compliant with officers and was taken into custody for firearms possession during the stop. Gonzalez is a known criminal street gang member within the City of Oxnard, is on probation with search terms in the County of Ventura and is prohibited from possession of firearms and/ or ammunition due to prior felony convictions.

The firearm in possession of Jaffet Gonzalez was found to be a loaded Glock 27 .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun with a high capacity magazine. During the stop, the firearm was found not to be registered to Jaffet Gonzalez, and he was arrested for various felony firearms related charges.

The registered owner of the firearm, Alexis Gonzalez (23yrs), was later contacted during a traffic stop at the 1400 block of West Channel Islands Blvd. Alexis Gonzalez is also a known criminal street gang member within the City of Oxnard. During the traffic stop, Alexis Gonzalez was found in possession of a “butterfly” gravity knife with metal knuckles incorporated into the side of the knife, ammunition, an incomplete Polymer 80 Glock style lower receiver and a large quantity of Xanax for sale. Alexis Gonzalez was arrested for felony weapons and narcotics related charges.

Oxnard State Beach / Disturbance:

At 1939 hours, June 14, 2021, Oxnard Police Officers responded to a disturbance call at Oxnard State Beach, 1601 S. Harbor Blvd. The incident was reported to involve 100 juveniles with fireworks and bottles being broken. Responding officers were met with thrown bottles as they were surrounded by about 300 people. Several units from both Port Hueneme PD and The Ventura County Sheriff's responded. Two arrests were made for firearm violations. One Oxnard officer suffered a hand injury and was transported for treatment. No other injured parties were located at the scene. The incident concluded at 10:06 PM. A news release will follow.

SUBJECT: Disturbance at Oxnard State Beach

At 1939 hours, June 14, 2021, Oxnard Police Officers responded to a disturbance call at Oxnard State Beach, 1601 S. Harbor Blvd. The incident was reported to involve 100 juveniles, fireworks, and bottles being broken. Responding officers were met with thrown bottles as they were surrounded by about 300 young adults and teenagers. Several units from both Port Hueneme PD and The Ventura County Sheriff's responded to assist. Two adult males were arrested for firearm violations. One Oxnard officer suffered a minor hand injury during the arrest. No injured parties were located at the scene. By 10:00 PM, the crowd had fully complied with directions to clear the park and beach areas.

Arrests:

David Martinez (19 yrs): Arrested for a number of firearm charges related to possessing two loaded P80 handguns with high capacity magazines. Additional charges for resisting officers during the arrest.

Juan Martinez (18 yrs): Arrested for a number of firearm charges related to the handguns found. Additional charge for resisting officers during the arrest.

On June 11, 2021, at approximately 9:28 p.m. officers from the Oxnard Special Enforcement Unit (Gang Unit) contacted a 16-year-old Oxnard resident for a suspected traffic violation. During the contact officers discovered the juvenile was in possession of a loaded, concealed semi automatic handgun. Once the juvenile was arrested the officers searched the juvenile incident to his arrest and located illegal narcotics on his person. The juvenile was charged with firearms violations and for drug possession. The juvenile was booked into juvenile hall.

SUBJECT: DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint Results

Oxnard, Ca. – 776 drivers were screened while driving through a DUI checkpoint on June 11, 2021. The checkpoint was held at Pleasant Valley Road west of Saviers Road from 7:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Thirty-two drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license and one vehicle was towed. No arrests were made during the checkpoint.

Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.

As businesses continue to reopen, including bars and restaurants, impaired driving remains a top traffic safety concern. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Oxnard Police Department Holding DUI Checkpoint on June 11, 2021

The Oxnard Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint on Friday, June 11, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The Oxnard Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or “operating heavy machinery,” which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

SUBJECT: Narcotics Sales Arrest

On June 8, 2021, at about 5:35 PM, Investigators from the Oxnard Police Department Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) observed Jesus Oy and Lianette Avila conduct a hand-to-hand narcotics transaction in the 100 block of Bryce Canyon Avenue. Investigators conducted a traffic stop of Oy in the 3100 block of Saviers Road, and found Oy to be in possession of bulk quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine.

During this investigation, Oy was also found to have a large amount of currency, and other indicia of drug sales. Avila attempted to conceal a large quantity of fentanyl and methamphetamine on her person, however it was ultimately located.

Both Oy and Avila were arrested for numerous narcotics violations, and were booked into the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office jail. This arrest is Oy’s third drug sales arrest in the last 2 years, and Oy is currently out of custody, on bail, for a weapons and drug sales arrest.

SUBJECT: Subject Arrested for Possessing Handgun with Obliterated Serial Numbers

On June 3rd, at approximately 7:15 p.m. officers from the Oxnard Special Enforcement Unit (Gang Unit) and Oxnard K9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a suspected traffic violation in the 1100 blk. of South Oxnard Blvd. The driver was identified as Bardomiano Sanchez, and the passenger was identified as Jose Diaz. Sanchez was found to be on parole for voluntary manslaughter and is a documented Oxnard criminal street gang member.

Officers searched the vehicle pursuant to Sanchez’ parole terms and located a loaded handgun inside the vehicle. The serial numbers to the firearm had been removed. Diaz was charged with possessing a handgun with an obliterated serial number, and possession of a loaded handgun, a felony. Sanchez was charged with violating the terms of his parole.

SUBJECT: Man Arrested For Murder After Road Rage Incident

LOCATION: Pacific Ave. and Mountain View Ave., Oxnard, CA

VICTIM: Lopez, Matias, 52 Year Old, Oxnard Resident

SUSPECT: Codella, Peter, 65 Year Old, Oxnard Resident

On April 23, 2021, at about 3:00 PM, officers from the Oxnard Police Department were dispatched to a call of a possible hit and run of a pedestrian in the area of Pacific Avenue and Mountain View Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, Matias Lopez lying in the roadway of Pacific Avenue. According to witnesses, Lopez was struck by the suspect vehicle after a verbal altercation took place in the middle of the street. The vehicle then fled the scene prior to officer arrival. Lopez was transported to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Unfortunately, on May 6^th, 2021, Matias Lopez succumbed to his injuries as a result of the incident and was pronounced dead.

The Oxnard Police Department Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and continued to work towards uncovering the nature of this incident. Based on evidence obtained, it was determined that this was a road rage incident, where the suspect and the victim had been engaged in a verbal altercation over what seemed to be a minor traffic issue. Lopez was then struck by the vehicle driven by Peter Codella.

During the investigation, facts were uncovered that Codella intentionally struck Lopez. The Oxnard Major Crimes Unit, along with the Ventura County District Attorney’s office worked together to examine this incident and based on the evidence obtained have charged Peter Codella with the death of Matias Lopez. He will be charged with second degree murder and will be held on a bail amount of $500,000.00.

This is the 8^th homicide in the City of Oxnard this year.
