On July 14, 2022, at about 6:10 P.M., investigators from the Oxnard Police Department’s Family Protection Unit arrested 70-year-old Oxnard resident Salomon Martinez. Mr. Martinez’s wife used their residence as a licensed in-home daycare center, Martinez Family Child Care, located in Oxnard. Mr. Martinez was arrested for four counts of child molest with two separate victims while they were in his home between 2012 and 2018.

Investigators from the Family Protection Unit investigated the allegations and determined there was enough probable cause to arrest Mr. Martinez. Mr. Martinez was booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility on a bail amount of $300,000.

The Oxnard Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation and believes there could be other victims who have not reported similar incidents to the police. SUBJECT: Fatal traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian

LOCATION: Rose Avenue at Tiesa Lane, Oxnard

On July 17, 2022, at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers with the Oxnard Police Department and EMS personnel responded to a call for service regarding a hit and run collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian that occurred on Rose Avenue at Tiesa Lane. The pedestrian sustained critical injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the collision. After the collision the driver fled the scene. The driver was later contacted by an officer away from the area of the collision. The driver was identified as Luis Armando Ayala, a 20-year-old Oxnard resident.

Traffic investigators responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Based on the investigation, it was determined that Ayala had been drinking alcohol. As a result, officers conducted a DUI investigation. Officers determined that Morales was impaired and under the influence of alcohol. Ayala was arrested for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI and felony hit and run.

When officers arrived, they located the victim, 29-year old Misael Sanchez. Sanchez was unresponsive and not breathing. EMS was summoned and Sanchez was transported by ambulance to the Ventura County Medical Center. Sanchez is currently listed in critical condition.

Officers spoke to witnesses and learned the fight was between two adult soccer teams. The fight occurred when the two teams disagreed with a referee’s decision. Sanchez was on the field playing soccer for one of the two teams when the fight broke out. During the fight, Sanchez was assaulted by multiple assailants.

Witnesses identified one of the assailants as 46-year old Berlin Jose Melgara. Melgara attempted to leave but was detained and arrested for assaulting Sanchez. The investigation is ongoing and investigators are trying to locate additional witnesses and video of the incident. On July 18, 2022, at approximately 8:12 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department and EMS personnel responded to a call for service regarding a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist that occurred at Gonzales Rd and Williams Dr.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2021 Dodge Ram Van was traveling northbound on Williams Dr. at the intersection with Gonzales Rd. The bicyclist, was westbound on Gonzales Road when the collision occurred. The driver of the Dodge remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Based on the initial investigation, Officers do not believe that speed or alcohol were a contributing factor to the collision. The bicyclist was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition. Traffic Investigators responded to take over the investigation.

The Oxnard Fire Department and the Oxnard Police Department are on scene of a single plane crash in the area of the 500 block South Ventura Rd. As a result Ventura Rd is closed in both directions between Second St and Fifth St. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes.

SUBJECT: Documented Gang Member / Prohibited Person Arrested for Possessing Handgun with Obliterated Serial Numbers

LOCATION: 6^th St. and Bard Rd., Port Hueneme

On July 8th, at approximately 7:15 p.m. officers from the Oxnard Special Enforcement Unit (Gang Unit) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a suspected traffic infraction. The driver, a juvenile, was contacted and found to be unlicensed. The two remaining juvenile occupants were found to be on probation with search terms. One of the probationers admitted to possessing a firearm in the vehicle.

The occupants were removed and detained. Officers searched the vehicle and located a loaded 9-millimeter Hi-Point semi-automatic handgun. Upon further inspection officers noted that the serial number had been obliterated (a felony). The juvenile, a documented Oxnard criminal street gang member, had a prior weapons conviction for possessing a weapon on school grounds and had specific probation terms that prohibited him from possessing firearms. This charge resulted in an additional felony.

The juvenile was arrested and transported to the Ventura County Juvenile Hall Facility. The juvenile driver was cited for driving while unlicensed and the remaining passenger was released.

SUBJECT: Oxnard Man Arrested for Shooting Death that left Two Others Wounded

Detectives with the Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit have made an arrest in the shooting death of 19-year old Oxnard resident Adrian Sandoval. Detectives arrested 19-year old Willis Nichols, an Oxnard resident, and charged him with the murder of Sandoval. Nichols was also charged with shooting and injuring two other men.

On March 12, 2022, at 9:38 P.M., Oxnard police officers responded to 3000 block of Saviers Road regarding a shooting. Officers found Adrian Sandoval suffering from a single gunshot wound. Unfortunately, Sandoval succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers also discovered that 19-year old Diego Mares of Oxnard, and 24-year old Arkangel Childs of Ventura had both been shot. Both were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, along with detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit and officers with the Special Enforcement Unit, along with members of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, worked tirelessly and diligently to uncover evidence that led to the arrest of Willis Nichols.

Nichols was arrested by detectives on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, and is being charged with murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held at the Ventura County Main Jail on two-million-dollar bail.

The City of Oxnard offers a reward of $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any individuals responsible for committing homicides within the City.
