DETAILS:
On October 12, 2011 at about 9 p.m., Oxnard Police officers were handling another call for service in the 4500 block Terrace Avenue when they heard several gunshots in the immediate area. While checking the area, the officers located a 19-year-old victim who had been shot and had several stab wounds. The victim was transported to VCMC where he underwent extensive surgery. Unfortunately the victim did not survive his injuries.

According to witnesses, the victim was walking in the 4500 block of Terrace Ave when an argument took place which involved at least two other men. The witness heard several gunshots and saw several people running through the alley.

For more than 40 years the Kiwanis Club of Oxnard has partnered with the Oxnard Police Department to recognize outstanding employees. The nominees for the 2011 Police Officer of the Year are: Officer Rachel Burr, Officer Mike Thomas and Sergeant Alex Arnett. The criteria for this award are: must have achieved the rank of police officer II or senior police officer; performance of duties in an exemplary manner; strong academic credentials or evidence of an earnest effort to obtain a higher degree; activity beyond the normal scope o duty as in voluntarily engaging in the community affairs of Oxnard in a significant way.
 
In addition to the Officer of the Year recognition, Chief Jeri Williams will present the following awards to OPD employees: supervisor of the year; civilian employee of the year; MADD award; dispatcher of the year; chief’s award of excellence; and volunteer of the year / Clancy Nieland award.
 
The Kiwanis Club of Oxnard was founded in 1947. It is part of Kiwanis International and supports many local and national events each year.

DETAILS:

At 2230 hours, 10/9/11, officers responded to a check-the-well-being of a 55-year old Oxnard woman. On arrival the officers were able to gain access to the home and the victim was found deceased. The victim’s name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. Oxnard Police are investigating the incident and the public is asked to call Detective Jeff Kay at 805.385.8174 with any information.

(Oxnard, CA) On Thursday, April 19, 2012 at about 12:44 p.m., Oxnard PD officers and fire personnel responded to a traffic collision in the 1000 block of Oxnard Boulevard – State Route 1. Upon arrival, officers found that a green sedan, driven by a 17-year-old male, had collided with an electrical transformer located in the parking lot of the Cabo Restaurant at 1041 S. Oxnard Boulevard. The collision caused the high-voltage lines that span across Wooley Road to fall onto the roadway creating a severe electrical hazard for both motorists and pedestrians. The downed power lines also disrupted power to several surrounding businesses and traffic control signals in the immediate area.
 
Southern California Edison officials responded to the scene and are currently working on replacing the downed lines and restoring power to the affected businesses.
 
To facilitate repairs, Wooley Road between “C” Street and Oxnard Boulevard (Five Points) will remain closed in both directions. Edison officials say that the repairs will take several hours and estimate a completion time of 2:00 a.m. on Friday. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes.
 
The driver of the sedan was not injured in the collision. Investigators are trying to determine why he veered off the road.

DETAILS:
On 9/21/11 at approximately 1540 hours, Oxnard Police officers were dispatched to St John’s Regional Medical Center reference a stabbing victim.  Officers responded and learned that the stabbing took place in the area of Channel Islands Blvd and Paula St.
 
The victim was walking in the area of Channel Islands Blvd and Paula St when he was approached by a Hispanic male, approximately 18-19 yrs. olds, 5’11” tall, 180 lbs., with a shaved head wearing black/blue/white flannel and black pants. The suspect stabbed the victim in the torso and ran towards Channel Islands Blvd. The victim was driven to Saint John’s Regional Medical Center by a private party. Due to his condition, the victim was transported to VCMC and is listed in critical condition.

(Oxnard, CA) On April 20, 2012 at about 8 a.m., Oxnard PD officers responded to the 4500 block of Reading Drive regarding a shooting and attempted residential burglary. Officers discovered that the victim of the attempted burglary stopped the 15-year-old suspect as he was leaving the area. The victim decided to drive the suspect home and was directed by the suspect to the College Estates neighborhood. While driving through the neighborhood, the victim noticed that he was being followed by two Hispanic males in a blue, full sized pick-up truck. As a result, the victim stopped his vehicle in the 4400 block of Anchorage Street. The driver of the full sized pick-up truck then fired once into the victim’s vehicle, shattering a window; the victim was not injured. All three suspects fled the area in the pick-up truck. Officers checked the area for the suspects and the suspect vehicle but were not able to locate them.

On 9/19/11 at approximately 2100 hours, Oxnard Police officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Mono Street in regards to a reported fight. When officers arrived they attempted to contact the driver of a vehicle that was allegedly involved. The driver of the vehicle accelerated towards the officer, forcing the officer to jump back to avoid being hit. When the driver of the vehicle failed to stop for the officers, a pursuit ensued.
 
The pursuit lasted approximately 15 minutes and the speed ranged from 10-15 mph. The pursuit was contained to a five to six block area in the Rio Linda neighborhood. The driver stopped his vehicle prior to running over spike strips that officers had set up. The driver was taken into custody without incident. He was identified as Brian Brackrog, a 33 year old Oxnard resident. Brackrog is on parole and had an outstanding warrant. He was booked into the Ventura County Jail and charged with the outstanding warrant, a parole violation, and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

[OXNARD, CA] – On Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Oxnard Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Oxnard Police Department at 251 South C Street. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
 
Last October, Americans turned in 377,080 pounds – 188.5 tons – of prescription drugs at more than 5,300 sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,000 state and local law enforcement partners.  The Oxnard Police Department accounted for more than 1000 pounds during this past collection.  In its three previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in almost a million pounds – nearly 500 tons – of pills. 
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses attributed to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – both pose potential safety and health hazards.
Four days after the first event, Congress passed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an “ultimate user” of controlled substance medications to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept them. The Act also allows the Attorney General to authorize long term care facilities to dispose of their residents’ controlled substances in certain instances. DEA is drafting regulations to implement the Act, a process that can take as long as 24 months. Until new regulations are in place, the Oxnard Police Department and the DEA will continue to hold prescription drug take-back events.
 
The agencies in Ventura County participating in the event are: Oxnard PD, Simi Valley PD, Port Hueneme PD, Ventura PD and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

On 9/18/11 at approximately 0103 hours, Oxnard Police officers were dispatched to 3120 Saviers Road (McDonald’s) in regards to several shots being fired. When officers arrived they observed two subjects fighting in the bushes next to the McDonald’s drive thru. One of the subjects, Salvador Hernandez, was armed with a firearm. Officers were able to disarm Hernandez and take him into custody. During the investigation, it was discovered that Hernandez had fired several shots at the victim at close range. One of the bullets went through the victim’s shirt, but the victim was uninjured.
 
The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, but it doesn’t appear to be gang related. Investigators are attempting to locate additional witnesses who fled the scene prior to officers arriving. DETAILS:
The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday, September 18, 2011, from 6:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. and arrested one (1) driver for DUI as a result of the heightened DUI prevention and enforcement effort.  The checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lanes of Oxnard blvd @ Second Street. 
   
Officers screened 1154 motorists who passed through the checkpoint location and conducted two (2) DUI investigations with drivers who had been drinking alcohol. One (1) driver was stopped after making an illegal turn, in order to avoid the checkpoint, he was found to be under the influence of alcohol.  The driver had a blood alcohol level of over a .20. This driver was arrested and booked into county jail and his vehicle was towed.
 
Citations were issued to 39 drivers for various drivers’ license violations at the checkpoint.  Seventeen drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license. Five vehicles were towed from the checkpoint. 
 
The Oxnard Police Department will conduct several more DUI enforcement operations this year.  These DUI operations are an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer.  We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911.  These DUI enforcement operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.
