INCIDENT:	DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint

DETAILS:
The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Division conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on October 26, 2012, from 9:00 P.M. to 3:00 A.M.

The checkpoint was conducted in the northbound lanes of Ventura Road at Seventh Street.

Officers screened 580 motorists who passed through the checkpoint. Officers conducted four DUI investigations that lead to the arrest of four drivers for DUI. One of those drivers was also arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor DUI warrant.

Six drivers were issued citations for various drivers’ license violations. Six vehicles were towed and the owners of those vehicles will face a minimum tow fee of 241.00. Six drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and 1 driver was cited for driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license.

The Oxnard Police Department will continue to conduct DUI enforcement operations this year. These DUI operations are an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer. We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911. The checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.

(Oxnard, CA)The Oxnard Police Department is suggesting ways to keep children and adults safe this Halloween.
Police are mostly concerned with increased pedestrian traffic that comes with trick-or-treaters. Police urge parents to equip their little ones with a glow stick or a flashlight. The glow sticks often work better than flashlights because children often shine a flashlight downward, which doesn’t make them any more visible.

Officers will be working in the neighborhoods, not just along the main roadways, to make sure drivers slow down. Patrol officers, will also focus on detaining any suspected drunken drivers.

To keep safe this Halloween, the Oxnard Police Department recommends these trick-or-treating tips:
Children should:

Use sidewalks and not walk in the street.
Cross only at corners or marked cross walks.
Never cross the road between parked cars.
Never go into a stranger’s house.
Watch for cars.
Carry a glow stick or a flashlight.

Costumes should be:

Flame retardant.
Not have high heels or dangling pieces to trip on.
Light colored or have reflective materials attached.
Use face painting rather than masks or things that can hinder vision.

Drivers should:

Drive in an extra cautious manner.
Keep an eye open for children.

Parents should:

Instruct their children not to open their candy until they return home.
Inspect all candy for tampering before their children eat it.
Make sure an adult accompanies young children.
Know what route their children will be taking.
Have a set time limit for children to return home.

Homeowners should:

Have the outside of their homes well lit.
Remove all obstacles from their lawns to avoid injuries.

(OXNARD, Calif) On November 5, 2012, at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of E. Channel Islands Blvd. reference a shooting victim. Upon arrival, officers located a victim of a gunshot wound. The 27 year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his torso and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center. At this time, the victim is listed in stable condition.

DETAILS:

On 11-07-2012, at approximately 10:25 AM, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to the 400 block of Navito Way in reference to five juveniles seen attempting to gain access into a residence in the area. As officers responded, five juveniles matching the description were detained a short distance away from the victim residence. A witness to the incident positively identified all five juveniles. It was determined that the juveniles removed a screen from a window at the front of the residence and attempted to access the house. When they were unable to gain access, two of the juveniles were lifted onto the roof where they again attempted to remove another screen to gain access into the residence. All five juveniles were placed under arrest for attempted burglary and transported to Juvenile Hall. One of the juveniles was also found to have a felony warrant for his arrest.

Citizens are reminded to lock all doors and windows to assure that their residences are secure.

DETAILS: On December 7, 2012 at about 12:36 PM officials were notified via an on-line posting that there was a possible weapon on campus at Hueneme High School. As a precaution, the school was locked down with school employees and officers from the Oxnard Police Department. During the investigation, students were interviewed, and it was learned that the witness, a student, did not actually observe a weapon. At 3:15 PM officials began an orderly dismissal of the student body, which ended at 3:50 PM. No one was injured as a result of this incident.

School officials, district administrators and the police department are working together to assure a safe school day when school reconvenes on Monday, December 10.

(OXNARD, Calif) Twenty nine deserving and needy children (ages 6 to 12) – one from each of Oxnard’s 29 elementary schools – were invited to the 2^ndannual Heroes & Helpers event at Target at the Collection at RiverPark.

The kids were treated to breakfast goodies, juice and coffee donated by Panera Bread, a coloring station, face painting, the DRAGG car, balloons, a Christmas tree, and a visit and photos with Santa & Mrs. Claus. The cop & kid teams then dispersed throughout the Target store to spend their $165 gift card any way they chose. It was awesome to see how so many of the children shopped first for gifts for their siblings and parents before they even thought of selecting something for themselves. It’s incredibly reassuring and heartwarming to witness children who live everyday with little still find it in themselves to act so selflessly and think first of others before they think to indulge themselves.

Before leaving, the little shoppers had their gifts wrapped by the Crime Analysis Unit and the Explorers and they received a goody bag from First California Bank and framed Santa photos as they departed the store.

Heroes & Helpers was originally made possible by a $1,500 grant from Target with a matching $1,000 contribution toward the event by the Oxnard Police Officer’s Association. The Collection at RiverPark donated $1,500 and First California Bank donated an additional $750. Target Executive Team Leader Chris Edwards said, “Today was an outstanding example of how law enforcement, Target and other local businesses can come together to impact those in need within our community in a very positive way.”

DETAILS: On 1-4-13 at about 0905 hours, Oxnard Police Officers responded to a check cashing business located in the 3100 block of Saviers Road reference a robbery that had just occurred. When Officers arrived they contacted the two victim employees in front of the business.

Officers learned that shortly after the two employees arrived at the business, two male suspects wearing masks forced their way into the business. The suspects then restrained both employees’ hands and took an undisclosed amount of cash before they fled the business.

(OXNARD, Calif) – On April 2, 2013 and April 4, 2013, members of the Oxnard Police Department’s SWAT Team, Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), and homicide investigators served a multi-location search warrant at three residences in the Lemonwood neighborhood in relation to the 2012 homicide of 19 year old Jose Gonzales.

A firearm, ammunition, and gang paraphernalia were seized during the warrants. No arrests have been made in relation to the murder of Gonzales but the investigation is progressing.
