DETAILS:

On May 27, 2011 at approximately 10:07 PM officers responded to a call of a shooting victim in the 300 block of Cuesta Del Mar. Police units arrived minutes later and found the victim on the sidewalk. The victim was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Witnesses told responding officers that the suspect drove up in a black full sized extra cab pick-up truck; the passenger exited the truck and started arguing with several subjects standing on the sidewalk including the victim. During the argument the suspect pulls out a weapon and shoots the victim. The suspect re-enters the vehicle and leaves the area. The victims name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

On 6/17/11 officers from the Oxnard Police Department will team up with Police Explorers and Volunteers in Policing to canvass specific areas of the Southwinds neighborhood in Oxnard for any possible witnesses to the two recent homicides that occurred within two weeks of each other. Teams will be deployed on foot, bicycle and horseback.

“We want the Southwinds community to know that our officers are here to help. We’ve had significant reductions in crime over the years in this neighborhood and we’d like to continue with that trend. We will always be dependent upon the cooperation of the neighbors to do our job effectively so we’re hoping that witnesses come forward to help us solve these heinous crimes” says Senior Officer Felice Johnson, Beat Coordinator for the area.

A 37-year old Oxnard man shot himself in the early morning hours at the cul-de-sac of Perkins Road Tuesday morning. The reasons for the suicide are unknown at this time. An investigation is continuing.

On July 9, 2011 at approximately 9:21 PM, officers responded to a call of a shooting victim in the 300 block of East Fir Avenue. When officers arrived they located the victim, who was shot once in the lower leg. The victim was transported to Ventura County Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.

According to witnesses, the suspect drove up in an older grey model van. The suspect exited the vehicle, yelled out a gang slogan, and shot the victim. The suspect vehicle was last seen driving eastbound on Fir Avenue.

DETAILS:
On 8/28/2011, between the hours of 8:30 PM and 9 PM, an adult female was confronted by an adult male suspect in the area of Sierra Linda Park. The suspect grabbed the female, pushed her to the ground, and sexually assaulted her. The victim screamed and fought with the suspect, which caused the suspect to flee the area. The suspect was last seen entering a unknown color sedan, similar to a Honda Accord, and driving on Holly Ave towards Ventura Rd.

On December 17, 2011 at about 8 p.m., Oxnard PD received a call from medical services personnel requesting our assistance with an injured man found in the backyard of a residence in the 3100 block of Paula Street.

Paramedics gave medical aid to the man and transported him to St. John’s Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. This case is being investigated as a suspicious death. The autopsy by the Ventura County Medical Examiner is pending. The victim’s name will not be released until his next of kin have been notified.

On 12/26/2011 at about 4 p.m. officers from the Oxnard Police Department were dispatched to the La Gloria Market regarding two subjects seen arguing and one who was stabbed with a knife. During the disturbance the victim possibly struck the suspect on the forehead with a belt and buckle.

The victim was transported to VCMC with a serious stab wound. He is currently in stable condition. The suspect was seen walking away north bound through the center of the parking lot and was last seen at the south east corner of Fourth Street and Oxnard Blvd.

It is unknown why the men were fighting or if the suspect is known to the victim.

On February 4, 2012 at about 11:30 p.m., Oxnard PD officers along with EMS personnel responded to a single vehicle (motorcycle), injury collision at the intersection of Fifth and “C” Streets. When officers arrived, theydiscovered that the motorcycle collided with the curb and a light standard. Officers and EMS personnel attended to the driver, a 21-year-old male. The driver was unconscious and sustained multiple injuries to his legs and upper torso as a result of the collision. He was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center for treatment where he is listed in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Fifth Street approaching “C” Street. The rider failed to negotiate a curve and crossed into the opposing traffic lane. The motorcycle struck a curb causing the rider to lose control and subsequently strike a light pole. No other vehicles were involved.

Investigators suspect that the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed and was not able to negotiate the curve because of the high speed. It is not known whether alcohol contributed to the collision. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

(Oxnard, CA) On Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 6 a.m. through Sunday, March 4 at 6 a.m. Gonzales Road east of Oxnard Boulevard at the railroad crossing will be closed. This closure is required for track maintenance of the Union Pacific Railroad crossing.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Additional railroad maintenance closures will occur over the next few weeks and the public will be notified in advance of those closures.

(Oxnard, CA) On January 1, 2012 at about 2:30 a.m. a woman walked out of her residence in the 200 block of Riverpark Boulevard and was confronted by a male suspect who shot her and fled the area. The victim is a 21-year-old female who was hospitalized for her injuries. She has since been released.

Oxnard PD officers responded to the scene and interviewed several witnesses. During the investigation detectives from the violent crimes unit identified Alexander Joel Mendez (5/12/84) as the suspect in this case. A warrant for attempted homicide has been issued for Mendez’s arrest. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Mendez is a Hispanic male, 27, 5’11” 160 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He drives a blue 1990 Chevrolet Lumina with California license plate 2WCJ445.
