DETAILS:

The observations of an alert Oxnard resident led to the arrest of a juvenile suspected in two vehicle crimes early this morning.

At 0654 hours, Oxnard police received a call of an auto theft in progress in the 700 block of Forest Park Blvd. The 30-year-old victim (whose identity is being withheld by police) watched his vehicle, a Chevrolet pick-up, being driven without his consent. The victim chased the suspect on foot and detained the juvenile until police arrived.

At 0654 hours, a second vehicle burglary was reported to Oxnard police in the same apartment complex. Stereo equipment was stolen from a Dodge pick-up.

Entry to both vehicles was made by force. Evidence recovered indicates the juvenile suspect was responsible for both crimes. All stolen property was recovered and returned to the owners.

The suspect was transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center for treatment of facial injuries received during a brief altercation with the victim. The victim was also injured but did not require medical attention. The juvenile was placed into Juvenile Hall on two counts of auto burglary, one count of theft of automobile, and violation of probation for a previous attempted burglary. An investigation is continuing.

DETAILS:

On 10/25/10 at about 1:10 p.m., Officer Jessica Eglin was traveling with several other police motorcycle officers on a training ride southbound Oxnard Blvd. (SR-1) south of Pleasant Valley Rd. when she bumped into another Oxnard police motorcycle. She subsequently lost control and crashed in the dirt/grassy center median. Officer Eglin was transported by Gold Coast Ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center where she was examined and subsequently released with no significant injuries. The collision investigation is being handled by the California Highway Patrol.

On 12-6-2010, at approximately 1820 hours, officers responded to the 300 Block of Cordova Street concerning a robbery with a gun that had just occurred. They contacted the victim who told them that he exited his truck and was confronted by two suspects. The suspects had exited a white Honda 4 door vehicle. The two suspects confronted him and initially asked for money. When the victim refused, one suspect pulled out an unknown type firearm and demanded the suspect give him all of his money. The second suspect took the victim’s cash and cellular phone. Both suspects fled in the vehicle.

On January 9, 2011, at approximately 1720 hours, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to the intersection of Rice Avenue and Camino Del Sol after receiving a call of an injury traffic collision involving a car and a motorcycle. Once on scene, officers found that a motorcycle, ridden by a female driver, 22 years old of Oxnard, and her female passenger, 20 years of Santa Paula, had collided with a Lincoln Town Car, driven by Stephanie Pinkard, 46 years old of Studio City. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center where she was immediately rushed to surgery and is listed in critical condition. The Town Car was carrying two passengers at the time of the collision. Both were uninjured.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Rice Avenue approaching the intersection on a green signal when the Town Car made a left turn from southbound Rice to eastbound Camino Del Sol in its path. The motorcycle was unable to stop and collided into the side of the Town Car.

The signal at this intersection is referred to as “protected permissive left turn signal”. The “protected/permissive phase” means that after the green arrow terminates, it is followed by a yellow arrow to indicate the exclusive left turn movement (“protected”) has ended. However, motorists will see a solid green ball indication without a red arrow so they can still make a left turn when safe to do so (“permissive”), as long as they yield to on-coming traffic.

It appears that the signal was in the “permissive phase” for left turning vehicles when the collision occurred.

It has not been determined whether or not alcohol or speed was a factor in this collision.

On January 9, 2011, at approximately 2330 hours, the Ventura County Medical Center contacted the Oxnard Police Department to make a notification that the motorcycle’s female passenger died during surgery. Her name is still being withheld pending family notification.

Since December 2010 the Oxnard Police Department has received several reports regarding vehicle tampering and wheel thefts citywide. Victims have found their vehicles on blocks with all four wheels missing. The thefts have been occurring during nighttime hours. Residents are asked to call 911 if they observe any suspicious activity.

On 2/7/11 at approximately 2037 hours, Oxnard Police Officers were dispatched to the 2400 block of Ivory Way in regards to an assault victim. When officers arrived they contacted the victim who had sustained a laceration to his head and an injury to his left eye.

According to the victim, he arrived home and when he exited his vehicle he was attacked by at least one person, with a baseball bat. The victim said that he lost consciousness and when he awoke he stumbled inside his residence and called the police. The victim was missing his keys and a large sum of money.

Investigators were able to follow up on several leads and identify the suspect as Mario Barrera (7/20/75). Investigators were able to locate Barrera at his residence and arrest him for robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Evidence relating to the crime was located at Barrera’s residence. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information is being released at this time.

The victim was transported to Saint John’s Regional Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

DETAILS:

On 03-03-11 at 7:45 A.M., a burglar entered an occupied residence in the 100 block of Navarro Street. The suspect removed security bars on a window to gain entry for the purposes of committing a burglary. An adult female victim was asleep in the same room where the suspect made his entry. The suspect, who was wearing a mask, became involved in an altercation with the victim before fleeing. Responding patrol officers located Paredes in the 1300 block of E. Third Street where he was discarding tools and clothing. He was arrested without incident.

Several items of evidence were located on Navarro and Third Streets. These items eventually led to the identification of the suspect Paredes. The victim in this case, a 25 year-old female, received minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.

Paredes (pictured to the right) was booked into the Ventura County Jail on charges of battery and burglary. Bail was set at $50,000.

On May 27, 2011 at approximately 10:07 PM officers responded to a call of a shooting victim in the 300 block of Cuesta Del Mar. Police units arrived minutes later and found the victim on the sidewalk. The victim was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Witnesses told responding officers that the suspect drove up in a black full sized extra cab pick-up truck; the passenger exited the truck and started arguing with several subjects standing on the sidewalk including the victim. During the argument the suspect pulls out a weapon and shoots the victim. The suspect re-enters the vehicle and leaves the area. The victims name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
