DETAILS:
The Oxnard police department is investigating a string of commercial robberies that occurred to North Oxnard businesses between the evening hours of 7/15/14 and the morning of 7/16/14. Oxnard police detectives believe a suspect that is currently in custody for an attempt robbery, is responsible for the recent commercial robberies.

The first commercial robbery occurred on 7/15/14 at approximately 2242 hours. Officers responded to a commercial robbery at Subway, located at 1941 North Rose Avenue in Oxnard. According to witnesses, a suspect entered the business and demanded cash from an employee standing at the register. Fearing the suspect had a weapon, the employee gave the suspect money out of the register.

The second robbery occurred on 7/15/14 at approximately 2259 hours. Officers responded to Food for Less, located at 150 West Esplanade Drive. An employee told officers that the suspect demanded money from the cash register. The employee feared he would be harmed, so the employee handed the money over to the suspect and the suspect fled the business.

The third robbery occurred on 7/16/14 at approximately 0928 hours at the Home Depot, located at 401 West Esplanade Drive. The suspect walked up to a cashier as if he was going to purchase an item. When the cashier opened the register, the suspect took the money from the register and fled.

The fourth robbery occurred on 7/16/14 at approximately 1007 hours at the Vallarta Supermarket located at 2690 Vineyard Avenue. The suspect entered the business and confronted a cashier. The suspect demanded the cashier give him the money from the register. The suspect fled the business after taking the cash.

The Oxnard police department made an arrest in an attempted robbery that occurred in the cafeteria portion of Saint John’s Hospital, located at 1600 North Rose Avenue. The attempted robbery took place on 7/16/14 at approximately 1105 hours.

According to witness statements, the suspect entered the cafeteria and confronted a cashier demanding money from the register. The cashier called for security and the suspect fled. A security guard followed the suspect out of the hospital and notified the police.

Oxnard police officers responded to the area of North Rose Avenue and Gonzales Road looking for the suspect. Officers and detectives observed a person running from the immediate vicinity of the hospital, which matched the description of the attempted robbery suspect. The person was detained and identified as Salvador Raymond Medrano, a 39 year old Ventura County resident. Medrano was positively identified as the suspect who tried to rob the cashier in the cafeteria. Oxnard police detectives believe Medrano is responsible for the recent string of commercial robberies that occurred at Subway, Food for Less, Vallarta Supermarket and Home Depot. Detectives are still working on gathering evidence to officially charge Medrano with those crimes.

No one was injured during the commission of these crimes.

UPDATE: As of 7/18/14, Salvador Medrano has been officially charged with four counts of robbery (Subway, Food for Less, Home Depot, Vallarta Supermarket). Medrano was already in custody for attempted robbery.

DETAILS: On 8/28/14, after a month-long investigation, investigators from the Oxnard Police Department’s Family Protection Unit (FPU), members of the Southern California High Tech Task Force, and officers from the Oxnard Police Department’s Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) served a search warrant at a residence in the 2000 block of Rhonda Street in the City of Oxnard. During the subsequent investigation and search, an Oxnard resident, Benjamin Theis, was identified as allegedly being in possession of child pornography as well as participating in the distribution of child pornography. He was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

The Oxnard Police Department would like to remind the public that the possession of child pornography is a felony and can be punishable with imprisonment in State Prison. In addition to being captured in images, many children depicted in the images are often the victims of sexual assault, exploitation, or human trafficking. The Oxnard Police Department is committed to the continuing investigation of these acts and will vigorously pursue those that participate in child-related crimes.

On September 30, 2014 at approximately 1630 hours, Officers from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit conducted a traffic stop in the area of Hill Street and Ventura Road. Immediately upon the vehicle stopping two subjects fled from it. Jonathan Barragan and Emeterio Cabrera were quickly detained.

The driver of the vehicle Federico Zapian is currently on parole. All three subjects are known gang members and Cabrera is on the Colonia gang injunction.

During a search of the area where the subjects had fled a loaded handgun was recovered.

Barragan was arrested for weapons violations, Cabrera was arrested for violating the gang injunction and Zapian was arrested for parole violation.

In an effort to address the recent increase in firearms-related crimes, the Oxnard Police Department launched the Operation Safer and Stronger initiative, as well as the Firearms Strike Team (FAST) led by the Violent Crimes Unit, to proactively remove firearms from prohibited persons in the City. The objective of the initiative and FAST is to reduce gun violence in Oxnard through education, intervention, and enforcement.

DETAILS:

On 12/11/14 at 12:25 pm, the Oxnard Police Department received a call of a subject stealing mail in the 2000 block of Teal Club Road in the city of Oxnard. Officers arrived on scene and contacted Ricardo Bravo. Bravo was still in possession of mail when the officers detained him. Witnesses identified Bravo as the person they saw stealing the mail out of a business mailbox. The victim confirmed that Bravo is not known to them and is not supposed to be in possession of their mail. Bravo was out on bail for a prior narcotics arrest and petty theft. Bravo was arrested today for possession of stolen mail.

This case was made a success by the witnesses who provided the information from a safe distance and by cooperation from the victims. The Oxnard Police Department wants to remind residents to exercise caution and continue to utilize the crime prevention tips we have been sharing throughout the year. These tips are part of our ongoing Operation Safer and Stronger initiative and can be found on our Department website, Facebook page, and on Nextdoor.com.

The Oxnard Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Maria DeJesus Garcia De Waldo, 73 years. Officers are currently searching for Maria.

The missing person walked away from her residence located in the 1000 Block of Beverly Drive late last night or early this morning. Maria is 5-3, 120, blond hair, and green eyes. She is a Spanish language speaker who was last seen wearing a black and gray jacket, blue or purple long sleeve shirt and black/orange pants.

DETAILS: The DRAGG program held its 2014-2015 graduation ceremony last week on 6-4-15, at its new shop location, 300 Graves Ave. #F. Over 100 students, family, friends and sponsors attended the celebration which is held every year a week before the high school graduation period.

DRAGG is an after school program and is a partnership between the Oxnard Police department, Oxnard Union High School district and the automotive industry to help at-risk youth get an introduction into the automotive industry. The students receive 5 credits each semester after completing 60 hours in the program.

This school year, the students worked on project vehicles in the DRAGG shop as well as participated on trips to meet races in Bakersfield and Formula Drift events in Long Beach. The students also had the opportunity to meet the legendary car builder, George Barris, at his shop in North Hollywood.

This year the program had 38 students graduate from five high schools within the Oxnard Union High School District. Eighteen students also received scholarships to help further their education in the field of their choice. This would not have been possible without the help of our sponsors; Martin V. Smith Foundation, Vortech Superchargers, Borla, Lucas Oil and Tacos Don Chente.

There will be no classes held during the summer months, but we are already accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. We are looking for incoming junior or senior students who would be interested, and are enrolled in the Oxnard Union High School District and can arrange transportation to meet at our new shop location at 300 Graves Ave #F. DETAILS:
On June 24, 2015, at about 6:00 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department and EMS personnel responded to the intersection of First Street and Dolores Court in reference to an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found that a small child had been struck by a Nissan Altima.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the Nissan, driven by Berardo Remigio, was traveling eastbound on First Street near Dolores Court when a two year old male ran into the roadway from the south side of the street and directly into the path of the approaching Nissan. The child was struck by the vehicle and sustained several injuries including head trauma.

The child was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center where he is listed as stable, but critical condition. Driver Remigio was not injured as a result of the collision.

Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed do not appear to be factors in this collision.

DETAILS:On 8/4/15 at approximately 2130 hours, Oxnard police officers were patrolling the area surrounding the 5400 block of Roland Way when they heard numerous gunshots. The patrol officers searched the area and located a victim in the east alley of the 5400 block of Roland Way. The victim, a 17 year old Oxnard resident, was suffering from numerous stab wounds and a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center and listed in critical but stable condition. The victim is expected to survive his wounds.

Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) responded to the crime scene to assist with the investigation. The motive for the assault is unclear, but the investigation is continuing.

DETAILS:
On November 7, 2015, at about 0010 hours, Oxnard Police Department officers responded to a shooting in the 400 block of North “G” St. Officers responded to the scene and located several victims. During the investigation it was learned that the victims were shot at by the suspect in the west alley of North “G” St. The suspect was seen jumping fences in the 400 block of North “H” St prior to officers’ arrival. Officers set up a perimeter around the area. Oxnard Police Department SWAT and Detectives responded to the scene.

Oxnard Police searched several locations on North “H” St. Officers located the suspect, David Cabanas, hiding in a residence on North “H” St. Cabanas was taken into custody without incident. Cabanas is a documented Colonia Chiques gang member.
