(OXNARD, Calif) – Investigators with the Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit have made an arrest in the 2012 murder of Jose Gonzalez. Gonzalez was shot and killed in the 2500 block of Greenbrook Drive.
On January 23, 2017 at approximately 1:30 P.M., police officers assigned to the Oxnard Police Department’s Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) arrested 25 year old Hugo Sanchez, an Oxnard resident. Sanchez was arrested after Major Crimes Investigators obtained an arrest warrant related to the murder of Jose Gonzalez.
On July 9, 2012, at approximately 8:52 P.M., Oxnard police officers responded to several 911 calls of shots fired in the 2500 block of Greenbrook Drive. Officers arrived and located 19 year old Jose Gonzalez suffering from a gunshot wound. Gonzalez was declared deceased at the scene. Police officers located a second shooting victim nearby. The second shooting victim, a 22 year old Hispanic male Oxnard resident, was transported to the hospital and survived his injury. Investigators from the Major Crimes and Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene to take over the investigation.
Investigators learned the victims were walking together in the 2500 block of Greenbrook Drive. Several subjects approached the victims and a confrontation occurred. During the confrontation, the victims were shot and the suspects fled the scene. Investigators believe the confrontation and murder of Jose Gonzalez was gang motivated.
Since the first day of the investigation, Major Crimes Investigators have followed up on leads, tips, and interviewed persons of interest in this case. Investigators also worked closely with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. Based on all the information gathered during the course of the investigation, Major Crimes Investigators were able to gather enough probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for Sanchez.
Sanchez was arrested for 1st degree murder and will be transported to Ventura County Main Jail. His bail is set at $1,000,000.00.
The arrest of Hugo Sanchez was a result of the unwavering and dedicated effort by Major Crimes Investigators, and in direct partnership with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. Major Crimes Investigators will continue to investigate the murder of Jose Gonzalez. Investigators believe additional arrests will be made in this case.
