DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Planned this Saturday

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

In California, this deadly crime led to 867 deaths and over 23,000 serious injuries in 2013 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Nationally, the latest data shows over 10,000 were killed by an impaired driver. Over the course of the past three years, Oxnard officers have investigated 634 DUI collisions, which have claimed 10 lives and resulted in another 424 injuries.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.

Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment affects.

Law Enforcement emphasizes the preventable nature of drunk driving reminding everyone that all it takes is a little planning ahead. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. But whatever you do, don’t drink and drive.The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. Launched last year, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to “Map a Spot” with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in their area or a “List of Spots” to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Users will be offered free incentives at each bar to celebrate their life-saving role. They can stay up-to-date with the latest from DDVIP and see what other users are saying via its social tab. Also through the app, for those who want to imbibe but also make it a point to plan ahead, users can easily order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb – all from one screen.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Oxnard Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

DETAILS:
On December 13, 2016, at approximately 1:47 a.m., officers were dispatched to an attempted robbery in the area of Cypress Road. at Arcturus Avenue. The victim advised approximately five suspects attempted to rob him. The victim stated two of the suspects were in possession of firearms. The victim provided a vehicle description of the suspect vehicle and the last known direction of travel.

Approximately 15 minutes later, officers from the Oxnard Police Department located a vehicle matching the description given by the victim. Officers initiated a high risk traffic stop and detained the three occupants of the vehicle. The victim positively identified two of the suspects as being involved in the attempted robbery. During a search of the vehicle, a loaded handgun and additional ammunition was located. The suspects were arrested for attempted robbery and weapons violations.

On December 10, 2016, at approximately 10:30 PM, Officers from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit and Violent Crimes Unit were conducting gang enforcement in the Diamond Bar neighborhood of Oxnard.

Officers observed a subject possibly casing for an auto burglary and attempted to contact him. The subject fled from officers and was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. During the foot chase the suspect discarded a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun. The juvenile was arrested and later booked into juvenile hall.

DETAILS: (Oxnard, Calif) – On December 9, 2016, at approximately 6:00 a.m., a passerby reported a subject passed out on the sidewalk in the 200 block of Vineyard Avenue. Oxnard Police responded a short time later and located a deceased male on the south sidewalk of Vineyard Avenue. Medical personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene and subsequently pronounced the victim deceased. It appears the victim died from a gunshot wound. \

During the investigation, it had been discovered that officers were dispatched to the area reference a shots fired call around 12:00 a.m. Officers were not able to locate a victim or any type of suspicious activity at that time. There was no suspect description provided to police during this earlier call for service.

This homicide incident is not related to the recent homicide incident which occurred on Almanor Drive on Wednesday morning. We have identified the shooting suspect from Almanor Drive and are working diligently to identify and locate the suspect(s) involved in this second incident on Vineyard Avenue.

The 9^th Annual Santa to the Sea Half Marathon is scheduled for this Sunday morning, December 11^th. The race starts at 8:00 a.m. in front of Santa on Ventura Boulevard and travels through the City of Oxnard where it ends at the Marine Emporium Landing located at 3600 South Harbor Boulevard. Over 3,000 runners will be participating in this year’s race.

Officers from the Oxnard Police Department will be handling the traffic control along the race course and motorists should expect significant delays at several intersections throughout the city. These intersections include:

Rice Avenue at Sturgis Road
Rose Avenue at Camino Del Sol
Fifth Street at Hobson Way
Ventura Road at Ninth Street
Wooley Road at Patterson Road
Victoria Avenue at Wooley Road
Harbor Boulevard at Wooley Road

Motorists wishing to travel northbound and southbound in the city are encouraged to use Oxnard Boulevard as it will not be affected by the race. Rice Avenue and Rose Avenue are expected to be re-opened by 9:30 a.m. All other roadways are expected to be re-opened by 10:30 a.m.

DETAILS: (Oxnard, Calif)– On December 7, 2016, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the Oxnard Police Department responded to the 2000 block of Almanor Drive reference a shooting that had just occurred. The reporting party identified himself as the shooter. Officers located the reporting party who was standing by the residence when officers and medical personnel arrived on scene. The reporting party is currently being detained and questioned by police.

A shooting victim was located at the location and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second shooting victim was located a short time later at St. Johns Hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. This victim was subsequently transported to the Ventura County Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

The Oxnard Police Department Major Crimes Unit and Violent Crimes Unit are on scene and investigating this matter in conjunction with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.

DETAILS:
On December 6, 2016, at approximately 3:45 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department Gang Unit (Special Enforcement Unit) were conducting uniform gang enforcement in the 4100 block of S. “C” St when they observed Alvaro Morales put a short barreled rifle underneath a vehicle and walk into his residence.

Officers quickly secured the weapon and went into the residence after Morales. The gang officers knew that Morales is an active gang member and that he had a felony warrant for his arrest. Morales was taken into custody and the firearm was recovered.

Morales was arrested for his felony warrant, possession of a short barreled rifle, and other firearm related charges.

On December 5, 2016, at about 1:20 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department Gang Unit (Special Enforcement Unit) were conducting uniform gang enforcement in the 1600 block of Woodland when they conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle violation.

When officers approached the vehicle they noticed Sandoval inside and recognized him as being a wanted subject. The gang officers also know that Sandoval is an active gang member. A search of the vehicle was conducted and officers located a stolen firearm and ammunition.

Sandoval was arrested for possessing a loaded, stolen firearm and ammunition.
