On Friday, June 15, 2018, between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver’s license checkpoint in the City of Oxnard. The checkpoint was conducted in the southbound lanes of Saviers Road south of Coach C Lane. This location was chosen to provide increased DUI deterrence and in response to recent alcohol-related arrests and DUI collisions.

The checkpoint resulted in the following:

835 vehicles through the checkpoint
812 drivers screened
14 DUI investigations
Four DUI alcohol arrests
One DUI drug arrest
One misdemeanor warrant arrest
13 citations issued to unlicensed drivers
25 total citations issued
One vehicle towed

The Oxnard Police Department will continue to conduct DUI enforcement operations this year. These operations are an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer. We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911. These DUI enforcement operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DETAILS: On June 15, 2018, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Officers and investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) and K-9 Unit, located the victim’s vehicle at the intersection of Orange Drive @ Friedrich Road, occupied and parked on the shoulder of the road. Four (4) subjects immediately fled from the vehicle and were quickly apprehended by the officers on scene. Agustin Cruz was arrested for his involvement in the June 10, 2018 Car Jacking. Gilberto Lopez, Juan Haro, and Oscar Hernandez were arrested for their actions stemming from today’s incident. All (4) subjects were subsequently booked at Ventura County Jail on various felony charges.

On June 15, 2018, at approximately 12:15 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a traffic stop at Rose Avenue and Fifth Street.

Officers contacted the driver, a 17 year-old female resident of Oxnard, and passengers, Osvaldo Hernandez and Michael Gomez, also of Oxnard. Both Hernandez and Gomez were on probation with multiple search terms. During the investigation a loaded handgun was discovered in Hernandez’ waistband.

Hernandez was arrested for multiple felony charges related to the possession of the firearm. Gomez and the juvenile were arrested for narcotic related offenses.

In recent months, the City of Oxnard has experienced an increase in the thefts of 1990’s Honda Accord and Civic vehicles. The Oxnard Police Department Auto Theft Task Force (OATTF) asks residents to help prevent the thefts of Honda Accord and Civic vehicles and offers the following tips:

Keep your vehicle locked at all times, even while driving.
When parked, never leave your keys in the car or leave a spare in your car.
Never leave your car running and unattended.
Avoid leaving valuables inside your vehicle where passersby can see them.
Use an anti-theft device (steering wheel locks, kill-switches).

The Oxnard Police Department Auto Theft Task Force was created to address stolen vehicle issues within the City of Oxnard. DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Planned this Friday

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, June 15, 2018, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

In California, this deadly crime led to 867 deaths and over 23,000 serious injuries in 2013 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Nationally, the latest data shows over 10,000 were killed by an impaired driver. Over the course of the past three years, Oxnard officers have investigated 724 DUI collisions, which have claimed 13 lives and resulted in another 476 injuries.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.

Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication – whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment effects.

Law Enforcement emphasizes the preventable nature of drunk driving reminding everyone that all it takes is a little planning ahead. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. But whatever you do, don’t drink and drive. The California Office of Traffic Safety DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile app is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. Launched last year, the new DDVIP app offers enhanced features, allowing users to “Map a Spot” with their current location to find DDVIP partnering establishments in their area or a “List of Spots” to search all participating bars and restaurants throughout California. Users will be offered free incentives at each bar to celebrate their life-saving role. They can stay up-to-date with the latest from DDVIP and see what other users are saying via its social tab. Also, through the app, for those who want to imbibe but also make it a point to plan ahead, users can easily order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb – all from one screen.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Oxnard Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

DETAILS: On June 12, 2018, at 10:23 AM, the Oxnard Police Department Communications Center received a call of a possible interrupted occupied residential burglary in the 1300 block of Nautical Way, Oxnard. Officers arrived and learned the suspect had entered the victim’s residence while the victim walked to a nearby trash enclosure to discard items from the residence. The victim returned, and observed a male suspect standing in the kitchen. The victim immediately ran into the residence to safeguard the victim’s four-year old son. The suspect retrieved a knife and threatened the victim to not scream, placing the knife to the victim’s throat. The suspect struck the victim several times about her head and face with an unknown object. The victim and the victim’s son were eventually able to flee to a neighbor’s house and call police. The victim’s son was not injured during the incident. Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) responded to the scene and are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this violent, and unwarranted assault

On June 14, 2018, at approximately 8:45 a.m., investigators from the Oxnard Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force (OATTF) observed a stolen Honda Civic stopped in the 2100 block of North Ventura Road. Investigators attempted to contact the driver and passenger of the vehicle, at which time both subjects fled the vehicle on foot. The driver, identified as Romeo Yere, was quickly apprehended and taken into custody.

The passenger, Eduardo Magallon, was recognized by investigators as having several outstanding warrants for his arrest. Magallon fled into the adjoining neighborhoods of Windsor North and River Ridge. After a prolonged foot pursuit, Magallon was apprehended in the 2000 block of Mariposa Street.

Romeo Yere was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest. Eduardo Magallon was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest and for his numerous outstanding warrants. Magallon has an extensive criminal record that includes numerous arrests for auto theft. Romeo Yere and Eduardo Magallon were booked into the Ventura County Main Jail.

The Oxnard Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force was created to address stolen vehicle issues within the City of Oxnard. The Oxnard Police Department advises citizens to park their vehicles in well-lit areas, lock their vehicles and use anti-theft devices to secure their vehicles.

DETAILS: On June 13, 2018, at about 9:05 PM, two suspects entered the business and committed an armed robbery. The armed suspect was described as a Hispanic male, 18-20 years old wearing a blue and gray checkered shirt, dark pants and a gray hat. This person was armed with a black handgun. A second Hispanic male, 16-17 years old, wearing a black jacket with white stripes, dark jeans, and a dark hat, assisted in the robbery. Both suspects fled the business on foot and were last seen to the rear of the business.

On June 12, 2018, at approximately 4:00 a.m., an Officer from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle for a vehicle code violation. The driver was identified as 27 year old Oxnard resident Paul Ramos and he was found to be driving on a suspended driver’s license from a prior driving under the influence arrest. A loaded .22 caliber firearm was located in the vehicle along with narcotics. Ramos was arrested for various felony firearms and narcotic charges.

DETAILS:

On June 12, 2018, at 2:09 A.M., the Oxnard Police Department Communications Center received a burglary alarm from a restaurant in the 100 Block of E. Fifth Street. Oxnard Police Officers were dispatched to the location to check the business.

Officers arrived on scene and heard objects being broken inside of the business. Several additional officers and a K9 were dispatched to the location. Officers set up a containment around the restaurant when the suspect, Ricardo Carmona, exited the front of the business. Carmona surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. Carmona was charged with commercial burglary.
