DETAILS:

On 7/03/18, at approximately 1:07 a.m., Oxnard police officers responded to a robbery with a handgun in progress to the 7-11 business located in the 1500 block of West Fifth Street. Officers learned that the suspects took several items from the business without paying. When the clerk confronted the suspects, one suspect brandished a firearm at the clerk. The suspects then entered a vehicle and fled the area. As Officers arrived on scene they located the suspect vehicle a short distance away in the 1400 block of West Fifth Street. An enforcement stop was conducted and the suspects were taken into custody without incident for robbery. The property from the robbery was recovered from the suspects’ vehicle. A black B.B. handgun was also located and identified as the gun used in the robbery.

On July 2, 2018, at about 10:00 PM, the Oxnard Police Department received a call of a shooting victim in the 4000 block of San Simeon Avenue. The victim, a 32 year old Oxnard resident, was confronted by unknown subjects and shot in front of a residence. The victim was transported to VCMC and treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder.

On July 2, at approximately 4:32 p.m., Officers from the Neighborhood Policing Team were working high visibility gang enforcement in South Oxnard in response to recent gang violence. The Officers contacted two known adult gang members seated in a parked vehicle in the 600 block of Howell Rd. There was also a 16 year old male standing outside of the vehicle. Officers searched the juvenile and located a loaded handgun in his front pocket.

In the spirit of Informing, Educating and Empowering our community, the Oxnard Police Department (OPD) would like to advise the residents of Oxnard of a potential crime trend citywide. Since the beginning of June, the City of Oxnard has seen an increase in stolen vehicles, primarily, 1990’s Honda sedans. Year-to-date, Oxnard has had almost 400 stolen vehicles with 32% of them being Hondas. In June alone there have been over 30 with half of those being Hondas!

This is not a new or isolated trend. According to NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), nationwide, the top two vehicles listed on the “Vehicles Most Likely to be Stolen” graphic are Honda Accords and Civics.

July is “National Theft Prevention Month” and OPD is on a mission to stop vehicle theft! The Oxnard Police Department would like the residents of Oxnard to know that we are diligently working to solve the issue. Here is a partial list of OPD’s upcoming efforts to lower the instances of vehicle theft:

Informational campaign to educate would-be victims on how to prevent vehicle theft;
Educational Public Safety Videos;
A #NotThisCar Campaign that sees detectives locating owners of 1990’s Hondas and providing them with steering wheel locks; and
An enforcement campaign to target known car thieves and put them on notice that OPD is watching!

OPD offers the following safety tips to lower your chances of becoming a victim:

Immediately report any suspicious activity! The police department encourages anyone with information about any criminal incident to call 9-1-1 or (805) 385-7740 from any phone.
DO make sure you do not leave your keys in your car, on or off. If your car is left on to warm up: stay with your car. Your car can easily be taken if you are not there to watch it;
DO make sure not to leave any valuable items in your car. These items are a temptation for someone to break your window and steal your things.
DO NOT enter if you find your vehicle broken into. Call 9-1-1 and wait elsewhere for police arrival. Try not to touch anything as officers can possibly obtain fingerprints or other evidence.

The Oxnard Police Department has been focused on extensive public engagement and community outreach, encouraging residents to be “Partners in Public Safety.” Residents are reminded and encouraged to report any and all suspicious activity to police, and can do so anonymously, with translators available 24 hours a day. On July 1, 2018, at approximately 1500 hours, Monica Nieves (age 11) walked away from the 500 Block of North Roosevelt Avenue in the City of Oxnard. At approximately 2030 hours, the parents called the Oxnard Police Department to help locate the missing juvenile whom had not returned home. The Oxnard Police Department is enlisting the public’s assistance in locating Monica Nieves. On July 1, 2018 at about 3:30 A.M., Oxnard Police Officers responded to a shooting victim at 1950 Solar Drive. When Officers arrived, the victim, Donald Reyes Jr. was located inside a hotel room. The victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced deceased by Emergency Medical Personnel at the scene.

The Major Crimes Detectives responded to the scene, began interviewing witnesses, and reviewing surveillance video. During the investigation, detectives were able to identify a 17-year old Hispanic male suspect. The investigation revealed the 17-year old suspect and Donald Reyes Jr. were involved in an argument when the suspect shot Donald Reyes Jr. The suspect fled the scene after the shooting.

Major Crimes detectives along with the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit attempted to locate the identified suspect. At about 2:00 P.M. The Special Enforcement Unit was able to locate the suspect and take him into custody without incident. The suspect was arrested for murder and transferred to the Ventura County Juvenile Hall.

On June 29, 2018 at 4:21 PM Oxnard Police Department officers responded to Yale Street and Highland Avenue to investigate a citizen’s report of several gang members loitering in the area. Officers arrived and observed seven subjects with open containers of alcohol.

During the investigation, officers attempted to search Filemoni Aloese but he became uncooperative. After subduing Aloese, a 9-shot 22 caliber revolver was located concealed in his waistband. Officers then searched Rodolfo Raya and found a hammer concealed in his waistband in addition to a methamphetamine pipe. Another firearm was located in a red Nissan Sentra parked next to the group. The gun was retrieved and found to be a 22 caliber semi-automatic pistol. The vehicle was determined to belong to another member of the group, Russell Escalona. Aloese and Escalona were arrested for the firearms-related charges and Raya was arrested for the concealed weapon as well as the drug paraphernalia.

On Thursday, June 28, 2018, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver’s license checkpoint in the City of Oxnard. The checkpoint was conducted in the westbound lanes of Pleasant Valley Road east of C Street. This location was chosen to provide increased DUI deterrence and in response to recent alcohol-related arrests and DUI collisions.

The checkpoint resulted in the following:

882 vehicles through the checkpoint
823 drivers screened
Six DUI investigations
Four DUI alcohol arrests
One DUI drug arrest
One misdemeanor warrant arrest
22 citations issued to unlicensed drivers
30 total citations issued
One vehicle towed

The Oxnard Police Department will continue to conduct DUI enforcement operations this year. These operations are an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer. We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911. These DUI enforcement operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On June 27, 2018 at about 2:55 P.M., Oxnard Police Officers responded to the 400 block East Pleasant Valley Road, Oxnard regarding two shooting victims. When officers arrived, one subject was pronounced dead at the scene and a second male was transported to the hospital.

The victims have been identified as 21 year old Alejandro Sanchez of Oxnard and 20 year old Christian Morales of Oxnard. Both Sanchez and Morales died from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe Sanchez and Morales’ deaths were gang motivated.
