On February 22, 2019, at approximately 3:00 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department were called to the 1000 block of Yarnell Place reference possible cruelty to an animal that occurred on February 18th.

Officers reviewed surveillance cameras in the area and were able to identify Eric Danielson, a 37 year-old resident of Ventura, and another man utilizing a compound hunting bow in an alley between two commercial buildings. In the video, Danielson appears to release an arrow. The two walk out of frame of the cameras but shortly reappear with Danielson holding a dead cat that he disposes of in a nearby dumpster.

Officers spoke to Danielson who admitted that he had shot and killed the animal. Danielson stated that he “tracked” the cat with the bow but did not intend to shoot it.

Danielson was arrested for 597(a) of the penal code, a felony. He bailed out from the Oxnard Police Department on a $10,000 bond.

DUI Checkpoint Nets One Arrest

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit arrested one impaired driver while conducting a DUI/Driver’s license checkpoint on February 22, 2019. The checkpoint was conducted on Saviers Road south of Coach C. Lane between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. The checkpoint resulted in the following:

• 608 vehicles were screened

• 1 DUI-alcohol suspect was arrested

• 19 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked

• 29 citations were issued

Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in the number of traffic collisions involving drug-impaired drivers. The Oxnard Police Department supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a “driving or operating machinery” warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana also causes impairment, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.

Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers involved in fatal traffic collisions had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed that more tested positive for drugs that cause impairment (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

The Oxnard Police Department offers these reminders to ensure a fun night does not get spoiled with a DUI:

• Decide before you go out whether you plan to drink or drive. You can’t do both.

• If you plan to drink, designate a sober driver before going out, or map out another way to get home safely by taking a cab, ride-share services like Uber or Lyft, or using public transportation. You can also look up designated driver services in your area using the National Directory of Designated Driver Services (NDDDS).

• If you are a designated driver, bars and restaurants statewide have created non-alcoholic specialty drinks (“D-Drinks”) for sober drivers: http://bit.ly/OTSDDrinks

• If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, call 911. Offer a description of the vehicle, location, and direction of travel.

• See your friend or other patron impaired trying to get behind the wheel? Take the keys or help them make other arrangements to get where they are going safely.

Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be approximately $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension, and other expenses not to mention possible jail time.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On February 22, at approximately 8:43 p.m., officers from the Special Enforcement Unit (gang unit) contacted several subjects in the 800 blk of Jane Dr., in the city of Port Hueneme. One of the subjects immediately identified by the officers was documented criminal street gang member Samuel Uribe, who had an outstanding felony warrant. Uribe was arrested for his warrant and officers discovered he was in possession of methamphetamine.

In the company of Uribe was Enrique Munoz and Adriana Ramos. Enrique Munoz was in possession of a concealed, unregistered handgun and was arrested for the felony firearms violation; Adriana Ramos was arrested for a misdemeanor warrant.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Operation Planned for Oxnard

The Oxnard Police Department will take part in a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation aimed at educating bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians on traffic laws, rules, and responsibilities.

On February 26, 2019, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., officers will be looking for violations made by bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians that put roadway users at risk. These violations include drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, failing to stop for signs and signals or any other dangerous violation.

Officers will also look for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Bike riders will be stopped when riding on the wrong side of the road, not complying with stop signs and signals, or other violation of the same traffic laws that apply to them as drivers.

Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising at an alarming rate. In 2016, 138 bicyclists and 867 pedestrians were killed on California roads. Pedestrian fatalities are up nearly 33 percent from 2012, and the number of bicyclists killed is up nearly 25 percent over the past five years. In 2018, the Oxnard Police Department has investigated six fatal collisions and 174 injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians.

People walking should only cross the street using crosswalks or intersections, preferably with a stop sign or signal. People on foot should also look for cars backing up and avoid darting between parked cars, make eye contact with drivers and wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials or use a flashlight at night.

Drivers should wait for pedestrians to cross the street, avoid distractions like using a cell phone, and be courteous and patient. All bike riders are reminded to always wear a helmet; helmets are required by law for those under 18. Bike riders should always go with the flow of traffic, let faster traffic pass and use hand signals when turning or stopping.

DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Planned this Friday

The Oxnard Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, February 22, 2019, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing.

The Oxnard Police Department reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. On February 17, 2019 at 1814 hours, Oxnard police officers responded to a shooting victim in the area of the 3100 block of Merced Place, Oxnard. It was determined that the lone victim was exiting his vehicle when unknown suspects began firing at him. The victim was struck one time in the arm and was later transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition and his injuries are not life threatening. Detectives from the Oxnard Police Department Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene and the investigation is on-going. No further information is available at this time.

The Oxnard Police Department is asking for assistance from the public to help locate and identify a perpetrator who assaulted a school employee on February 14, 2019, at approximately 4:00 p.m., in the 400 block of East Olive Street in Oxnard.

The suspect was described as being a Hispanic male in his mid-20’s with a dark complexion, 5-02, thin build with dark short hair and a thin mustache wearing a long- sleeved light grey sweatshirt, dark grey shorts with a black vertical stripe and a black ballcap.

The suspect was seen riding his silver/chrome BMX style bicycle in the area prior to the incident. He fled on foot toward San Marino Street after the assault. Neighbors in the area with video surveillance systems or video doorbells are asked to assist by providing detectives with any possible video footage that would help identify the suspect.

On February 17th, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Officers from the Special Enforcement Unit (Gang Unit) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle initially stopped in the Shell Gas Station parking lot at the intersection of Rose Avenue and Gonzales Road, Oxnard. The driver of the vehicle, Jason Brickell, then drove the vehicle out of the parking lot attempting to flee. The right front passenger, Ramon Celis, attempted to flee from the vehicle on foot as it exited the parking lot onto Rose Avenue. A short foot pursuit ensued, but Celis was taken into custody a short distance away without further incident.

During a search of the vehicle, Celis was found in possession of a loaded .357 Sig Glock 33 semi-automatic handgun. Celis was also found in possession of ammunition, three-quarters of an ounce of Fentanyl, methamphetamine and forty-four Xanax pills. Celis is a documented Colonia gang members in the City of Oxnard, and is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition due to prior felony convictions. Celis was arrested for numerous firearms and narcotics violations.

The driver, Brickell, was found in possession of methamphetamine, and arrested for willfully evading, firearms violations and narcotics violations.

On February 16, 2019 at about 2:45PM, Officers were dispatched to the area of Hamilton Avenue and Yale Street reference suspicious subjects loitering in the area. Upon arrival, officers made contacts with multiple persons in the area.

One of the subjects contacted, Caliboso, was found to be on probation with search terms. Officers searched Caliboso’s vehicle and located a loaded firearm adjacent to the driver’s seat. The firearm held a large capacity magazine, and was not registered to Caliboso.

Caliboso was arresting for multiple firearms violations, including possessing a loaded firearm with a high capacity magazine, a felony.

On February 15, 2019 at about 8:50PM, Officers were dispatched to the south alley of the 300 block of Cuesta Del Mar reference subjects drinking and disturbing. Upon arrival, officers observed subjects loitering around a parked vehicle; multiple subjects fled when they saw police officers.

One subject who fled, Cuen, was detained by an officer. Cuen was found to be on Post Release Community Supervision for possessing a firearm. Cuen was arrested for resisting & delaying the duties of a peace officer, and a flash incarceration for violating the conditions of his PRCS.

Officers also located an additional subject, Aguilar, seated inside the parked vehicle. Aguilar is also on probation for firearms and drug offenses. Officers searched the vehicle where Aguilar was located; underneath Aguilar’s seat officers found a loaded 9mm handgun. Aguilar was arrested for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a felony.

Both Aguilar and Cuen are documented gang members.
