The 12^th Annual Santa to the Sea Half Marathon is scheduled for this Sunday morning, December 8, 2019. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. in front of Santa on Ventura Boulevard and travels through the City of Oxnard where it ends at the Marine Emporium Landing located at 3600 South Harbor Boulevard. Over 2,200 runners will be participating in this year’s race.

Officers from the Oxnard Police Department will be handling the traffic control along the racecourse. Motorists should expect significant delays at several intersections throughout the city. These intersections include:

Rice Avenue at Sturgis Road
Rose Avenue at Camino Del Sol
Fifth Street at Hobson Way
Ventura Road at Ninth Street
Wooley Road at Patterson Road
Victoria Avenue at Wooley Road
Harbor Boulevard at Wooley Road

Motorists wishing to travel northbound and southbound in the city are encouraged to use Oxnard Boulevard as it will not be affected by the race. Rice Avenue and Rose Avenue are expected to be reopened by 8:30 a.m. All other roadways are expected to be reopened by 10:00 a.m.

DETAILS:

On December 2, 2019 at 10:05 p.m., an Oxnard Police Officer attempted to stop a green ’01 Nissan Sentra at Doris and “A” Streets for a vehicle code violation. The vehicle failed to yield and the officer began pursuing the vehicle. The vehicle eventually travelled north on “F” Street to Ivywood Drive when the driver fled from the vehicle. After a brief foot pursuit, officers detained the suspect, Flores. Flores, a post release offender, was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm, as well as various amounts of both methamphetamine and heroin. As officers were chasing Flores, one of the remaining occupants in the vehicle took control of the vehicle and drove away. Officers were not able to locate the vehicle.

Flores was charged with multiple firearm violations, including possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, as well as possession for sale of illegal drugs. He was also charged with evading a police officer.

On Monday, December 2, 2019, at about 8:30 a.m., Oxnard police officers arrested a man and a woman and a teenager in a suspected carjacking and kidnapping on Alvarado Street in Oxnard.

Pardo, Sanchez and a 15-year-old took a man’s car and then forced him to get in the car. The victim was taken to Ventura where he was released and was not hurt.

Sanchez, Pardo and the teen are facing charges of kidnapping and carjacking.

On December 1, 2019 at 9:45 p.m., officers from the Special Enforcement Unit (gang unit) were in the 3100 block of Merced Place reference recent gang activity. Officers contacted Martinez during a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, Martinez fled from the vehicle. After a short foot pursuit, Martinez was taken into custody while trying to fight with officers. Martinez was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm. The firearm found in Martinez’s possession was also found to be unregistered. Martinez is a documented criminal street gang member from the City of Oxnard.

An officer sustained minor injuries during the struggle with Martinez.

Martinez was arrested for multiple firearm violations as well as using force to resist a peace officer.

On December 1, 2019, at approximately 1:35 A.M., Oxnard Police Department Officers responded to a commercial burglary that just occurred at Tomas Café. Private security personnel witnessed a suspect leaving the business and discarding a cash register.

When Officers arrived on scene, they began checking the area for the suspect. Suspect Juan Cardenas was seen running through the businesses in Heritage Square. Cardenas was contacted trying to leave the area and detained. It was at this time a second burglary was discovered at El Pollo Norteno, where the cash register was also removed.

Cash registers from both businesses were recovered at the scene. Suspect Cardenas was arrested for two counts of 459 PC – Burglary.

Each year, during the holiday shopping season, the Oxnard Police Department deploys additional officers to local high volume shopping centers in an effort to prevent and deter criminal activity. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for holiday shoppers.

Tonight, at approximately 5:25 p.m., the Oxnard Police Department received a call from loss prevention employees at Home Depot, 401 W. Esplanade Drive, who described a theft of power tools in progress. The loss prevention employees said they immediately recognized the suspect from prior thefts and again observed him concealing additional store merchandise on his person.

Officers who were patrolling the Esplanade Shopping Center arrived shortly after the call was received and positioned themselves outside the store while communicating with loss prevention employees. A few minutes later, suspect Joshua Nunnes walked outside the store after failing to pay for the merchandise he still had concealed on his person. As officers approached, Nunnes immediately discarded some of the stolen items and ran through the parking lot in an attempt to get away. Officers gave chase and were able to apprehend Nunnes a short distance away.

During a search of Nunnes, he was found to have additional stolen Home Depot merchandise on his person. The total value of the stolen merchandise was over $420. Nunnes was transported to the Ventura County Jail where he was booked on charges of theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

The Oxnard Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing at risk adult. On 11/29/19, at 4:12 p.m., the department received a call of a missing at risk adult from a convalescent care home in the 1400 block of West Gonzales Road. The missing person is Arturo Natividad. He was last seen at the care home today around 11:30 a.m. Natividad is described as a Hispanic, male, age 64, 5’10”, 160 lbs., long black hair, brown eyes, wearing a grey sweatshirt, grey sweatpants and slippers. It is believed that Natividad voluntarily left the facility however medical staff has advised that Natividad suffers from a potentially life threatening condition. (OXNARD, California) – Over 70,000 people in the United States will die this year as a result of overdosing on opioids. Opioids include everything from heroin and fentanyl to prescription pills like oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), codeine and morphine. Overdose deaths have risen fivefold since 1999.

The Oxnard Police Department has been focusing on addressing this crisis and saving the lives of our residents. Officers respond to the consequences of drug misuse every day. They see the toll this crisis is taking first-hand, and have taken a critical role in helping reduce opioid-related deaths in our community.

“First and foremost, we are committed to saving lives in our community any way we can,” said Police Chief Scott Whitney, “in this case, we want to save lives by encouraging the safe disposal of opioids and through first-responder administration of Naloxone.”

The Police Department has created a close working partnership with Ventura County Behavioral Health to address this issue. Together, these departments have created a video to bring awareness to the “Overdose Prevention Program” offered through Ventura County Behavioral Health to inform the community of the life-saving efforts and prevention strategies. The Department has trained over 150 police officers to administer Naloxone to overdose victims. Officers are now issued Naloxone kits to help save lives and combat the opioid epidemic.

Ventura County Behavioral Health also now provides at-home Naloxone kits for families who reside in our county. The administration of Naloxone provides vital time until EMS arrives to care for the victim.

In the past year in Ventura County, 237 lives have been saved by Naloxone. If you or someone you care about may be in danger of an opioid overdose, call the Ventura County Behavioral Health confidential assistance phone line for a free rescue kit: (805) 667-6663.

The Oxnard Police Department’s recent efforts also include providing education on potential prescription drug misuse and highlighting safe and effective ways for the general public to dispose of prescription medication. In order to combat addiction and misuse of opioids, it is of the utmost importance to dispose of any unused or unwanted prescription medications. The Oxnard Police Department, Ventura County Behavioral Health and City of Oxnard Senior Services have partnered to provide quarterly “Drug Take Back” events at the senior facilities in the city. Additionally, a pharmaceutical drop-off bin was installed in the lobby of the police station (251 S C St., Oxnard CA 93030). We also now accept pet medications and syringes.

Police Chief Scott Whitney actively participates on a countywide drug overdose prevention workgroup. This workgroup consists of physicians, public health employees, hospitals and law enforcement and the focus is finding strategies to better address the countywide opioid problem.

DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint Planned for Friday night

The Oxnard Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, November 22, 2019, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

DUI checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing.

The Oxnard Police Department reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.

In 2017, 1,120 people were killed in alcohol-involved crashes on California roads. Last year, the Oxnard Police Department investigated 208 DUI collisions which claimed four lives and resulted in another 112 injuries.

The Oxnard Police Department offers these reminders to ensure you have a safe night of fun that doesn’t involve a DUI:

Always use a designated sober driver – a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation – to get home.
See someone who is clearly impaired try and drive? Take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way home.
Report drunk drivers – Call 911.
Hosting a party? Offer nonalcoholic drinks. Monitor who are drinking and how they are getting home.

Getting home safely is cheap, but getting a DUI is not! Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to be upwards of $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses not to mention possible jail time.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Oxnard Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
