Be Safe, Not Spooky This Halloween:
Drivers Be Alert for Little Ghosts and Goblins on the Go
As Halloween approaches, ghosts and goblins of all ages are getting ready to head out for trick-or-treating fun. To make sure the holiday stays as safe as it is spooky, the Oxnard Police Department has put together a set of safety tips for parents, kids, and drivers. Let’s work together to keep Halloween safe and memorable for everyone.
Because of the parties, trick-or-treating and other festivities, Halloween night can be especially dangerous on our nation’s roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), adults between the ages of 21 and 34 had the highest percentage (54%) of fatalities in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night between 2018 and 2022.
Whether you are celebrating Halloween or enjoying the night out, the Oxnard Police Department offers the following tips for families to be as safe as possible and share the road safely:
Drivers
· Slow down and watch out for more foot traffic in residential neighborhoods.
· Take extra time looking for trick-or-treaters at intersections and entering/exiting driveways.
· Never drive distracted or impaired.
· If you are heading to a local bar, restaurant or house party and plan to drink, bring the designated sober driver with you, use public transit or a rideshare service, or stay the night.
Parents/Caregivers and Trick-or-Treaters
· Make sure costumes fit to prevent trips and falls.
· Decorate costumes and bags/buckets with reflective tape.
· Have kids use flashlights or glow sticks to make it easier for drivers to see them.
· Walk on sidewalks, when available. Avoid darting into the street or crossing between parked cars.
· Stick to familiar, well-lit routes.
· Look both ways before crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

During the past month, the Oxnard Police Department’s Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) began an investigation into narcotic sales in District 4, which is located in the southern part of Oxnard. The investigation led to the identification of several residences associated to narcotic sales. Multiple search warrants were executed at these residences in District 4 resulting in narcotic and gun related arrests, including, a suspect who fled from officers and barricaded himself in a residence.
As the investigation progressed, DEU detectives identified a residence located in the 2900 block of Paula Circle which was maintaining and allowing the selling and use of controlled substances in and around the residence. This behavior became a nuisance to the neighborhood by affecting the quality of life due to the narcotic activity. Additionally, over 30 calls for service were generated for the past two years for narcotic activity, and fentanyl overdoses – one fatal overdose. DEU detectives gathered sufficient evidence allowing them to secure a search warrant pursuant to California Health and Safety Code section 11366.
On October 24, 2024, DEU detectives, with the assistance of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office – Special Crimes Unit, Oxnard Police Department’s Neighborhood Policing Team, and the Oxnard Police Department’s Patrol Division, executed the search warrant. In total, 14 adults were arrested for narcotic related charges and/or outstanding warrants. Detectives located suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine packaged for sales along with evidence related to illegal narcotic usage. All 14 adults were transported to the Oxnard Police Department’s jail facility for booking.
Inside the residence DEU detectives observed evidence that required the City of Oxnard’s Code Compliance and Animal Safety to respond. In addition, Adult Protective Services were notified. DEU detectives will be working closely with the City Attorney’s Office to ensure this type of activity discontinues at the residence.
This operation could not have been done without the assistance of the Oxnard Police Department’s Police Service Officers and Traffic Service Assistants.

Oxnard Police Department to hold DUI Checkpoint and use extra officers to patrol for suspected impaired drivers
The Oxnard Police Department will have additional officers working patrol on Friday, October 25, 2024, specifically looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. In addition, the Oxnard Police Department will hold a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city.
