The Oxnard Police Department Firearms Training Unit’s mission is to provide realistic and verifiable firearms training in the safest possible manner, utilizing the discipline and skills necessary to effectively use the firearms the officers are assigned to carry.
The unit is commanded by two sergeants and staffed with sworn officers as Range Masters and Range Safety Officers. The Range Masters and Range Safety Officers are sworn officers, which consist of officers and detectives, who work the assignment as a collateral assignment. Firearms Training Unit Instructors receive advanced training from the FBI for marksmanship and instruction. The members of the Firearms Training Unit also receives on-going training in other firearms related fields to include armorer training, combat shooting tactics, simulator instructor training, patrol rifle and shotgun instruction. Instructors are experienced law enforcement professionals who recognize the importance and responsibility of using a firearm to save lives.
All Oxnard Police Department sworn personnel qualify on a bi-monthly basis with pistols, shotguns, and patrol rifles. In addition to live fire instruction, the Unit also offers realistic firearms training on a firearms training simulator. The simulator is designed to train officers in the use of deadly force and the decision-making process that those situations demand. The system places officers in numerous realistic scenarios in which he/she must interact and communicate with characters in real life situations; attempt to diffuse critical incidents and bring them to peaceful resolution; exercise sound tactics; and use designated weapons that record the officers accuracy.
